Memory Map Navigator woes

Can't help Chris, I sometimes get the odd snag because I'm
mixing versions (with the aid of a hex editor). On the whole
the program works fine and printing okay. Saves me a bob or
two on maps as well.

I found that I had to completely uninstall the old version
and then install 2004 in a different directory before I
could get everything working.

I have the 2004 version installed in a different directory
to the 2003 one. The problem is with the latest official
release (4.2.2). Printing works fine with the version on the
installation disc (4.0.1). It seems they have added various
extra print options with the later version, which is great
if I could get it to print anything!

uninstalling, cleaning the registry, different directories,
different machines - all to no avail. I've filed a support
request via their website last week, but have yet to get
even an acknowledgement.

Also, I think the (undocumented) changing of the format of
the routes is a potential problem. It means you can't send
routes to another user unless they also have the latest
version. The software, when it works properly, is very good.
However, as a software company I am not sure they are very
competent. It remains to see how their customer service pans
out, particularly as there have been a few complaints about
them aired here in the past.

From experience, I'd be surprised if you get much help from
their support people (person?) on printing problems.

I had a lot of printing problems when I installed Version 3
about two years ago:
(a) The program terminating
(b) the program printing routes / waypoints/ tracklog OK
..... but without the background map.

Only response from the supplier? 'Try the latest printer
drivers' -- made no difference, of course.

In the end , it was just a case of removing the software and
reinstalling -- time after time in various combinations
until it finally worked.

Hence my reluctance to move on to Version 4. Version 3 does
what I want it to do -- so I'll stick with that for the
foreseeable future.

I've just emailed their support with the following:

Still no reply from the UK branch, but I did get a reply
offering to help from the US in response to an unfavourable
survey I sent via their website, basically saying I was less
than impressed with their customer support. Maybe they will
be able to help??

Sometimes I wonder why I stick with OziExplorer - sometimes
I know....

I also use OziExplorer, (which is ace software), but I do
find the 3D representations in Memory Map useful in
planning routes.

I have had further contact from US support, and over there
they apparently have version 4.2.4 which should solve any
printing problems, apparently. However, we can't use the
US version with OS maps. They had to make a special
version of Memory Map Navigator to work with OS maps so it
was not possible to scan and calibrate paper maps. So
basically, we have some crippled software to ensure the OS
can continue to rake it in. Interestingly I found this on
the Memory Map website:

"Updates to the regular Memory-Map version will continue to
be free. Our customers are our best ambassadors in the
market, and we want to give you the best tools available to
do that job!" mmmmmhh!

BTW, I have finally received a reply from Memory Map UK.
They've passed my email to their development team in the US
to look into! Hopefully they can get a work-around to
prevent me scanning my paper maps, but still allow me to
print to A4. :0

That's interesting; it was (still is) Win98 that I was using
when I had my printing problems with Version 3.

From what I can gather the main development of this software
is in the US. I wonder how many of the problems arise
because they are trying to handicap the software for us
Brits, so we can't scan in OS maps, print larger than A4, or
commit other heinous crimes?

If you want 3D visualization and you already have maps (to
scan) why not try Trailgauge trailgauge.co.uktrailgauge.co.ukOpen ↗ The
free demo version will probably do all that you want
including printing.
