My Bullit's 5th Element is leaking oil. My lbs offered to send it in for me. I called progressive and they will take it from me too.
What would be faster, have the lbs do it or do it myself?
I don't need the mech work to take it off or put it on so that doesn't matter to me. Just wondering of Progressive responds faster to a lbs than they would to me.

Do it yourself. You'll know when you shipped it, and you'll know when you receive it. You won't have to call your LBS to check.
When I worked for a fork manufacturer we treated everything we received the same unless it was a known VIP.

Agreed.
I had a similar situation with my Romic recently. I'll always opt to deal directly rather than go thru a middle man. -- Slacker

Romic's around the corner from my bro's, next to XRs Only out in Hesperia. When I called them about spring availability they told me to stop by when I'm visiting my bro and they'll dial me in. I still haven't taken them up on the offer because I'm happy with the stock spring.

They're pretty cool... I would go just for a potential tour of the joint. -- Slacker

Jim had the same problem with his 5th Element when he first got his Bullit. We just sent it in ourselves and got it back within a week. Do a deja search and read about our experience.

So would anyone reccomend another shock (for a Bullit) over the 5th? I am more interested in performance than being bob free.
I use a Fox Vanilla RC. I love it. It may not be a bob-free as the 5th Element when pedalling, but it sure feels like you're riding on clouds when going over stuff.

I did (posted 11/8/03) and also checked out mtbr.com (for whatever it's worth).
What is up with the air shock? The coil over seems to be beefy and reliable, but the air sounds like it's a disaster in terms of reliability. Great in theory, but tends to blow up in use.

hehe, you guys remember that I posted my pal Tuffgrrl's new Heckler 5th Element crapped out, and that she ended up with the shop owners on her bike? Well, we were out yesterday, doing basically flat urban riding, and THAT one crapped out! All of a suddenly the bike was going boingity-boingity-boing-boing- boing!! I was there, I swear she didn't do anything strange...

So, after you got your overhaul, how did it work?

We haven't had a problem with it since they fixed it up.

WHen you're there, ask if they have any spare 650x2.00" ti springs just lying around :-)

I was thinking about that last night. In fact, I almost sent Pete F. an email asking where he got his.
