Bakewell: places to eat

It depends what you define as slap-up. You could try the
restaurant in the Rutlands Arms Hotel, though you would need
to check bookings on Saturdays - it is usually busy....

The hotel is bang in the centre on the island on the main
A6. I've stayed a few times and the food was good, though
not cheap at around £25 for 3 courses...

It depends what sort of meal you're after. In Bakewell
itself I quite like eating at Aitch's Bistro. The food and
wine are both excellent but some people think it's
overpriced and loud. I disagree. There's a buzz but it's
just the buzz of people having a good time. Bakewell Balti
will do you a fine Indian at a reasonable price. They're
part of the local chain of Abid restaurants and in my
experience I have never had a bad meal at one of thier
places. Further afield you could do worse that booking a
table in the restaurant at the Monsal Head Hotel but avoid
the fish, which is the only thing they don't do well. They
also have TT Landlord. The Bull at Ashford in the Water is
something of a favourite of ours when we can't be bothered
to cook during the week. Well cooked food and puddings to
die for but the beer is a bit weak. The Barrel at Bretton
has recently upgraded its menu and is now well worth a visit
while The Peacock at Rowsley will do you a very nice silver
service at a price that wont break the bank. You can also
get decent pub grub in the [censored] and Pullet (sic) at Sheldon.
So many places to eat, so little time :-)

If you're going for this price bracket then you're probably
better off at Fischer's in Calver.

Is there still and Austrilian diner (or bar) in Bakewell?

My wife and I once ate at the Red Lion(?), and I picked up a
£30 parking ticket, which made it an expensive day in
bakewell. :-(

Is that the one just off the market square ? If it's the
one I'm thinking of then its the one that's recently had
the courage to go completely non-smoking. I don't know how

If that's the case, I might give it another try. Of course
it wasn't the pub's fault, I parked round the corner in a
back street where others were parked, because it was cattle
market day and the car parks were full. :-(

I could find it again, I think it's on the road which leads
over the bridge.

As for mountains - try the approach to Budva-Tivat airport,
it's scary even in FS 2002, between two mountains, then turn
90° right, no chance of overshoot, there's a mountain in
front of you, and you have to take off in the only direction
possible, back where you came from.
