  1. you u.r.c lot, yous are all to blame. Several months of lurking here
have had a worrying impact on my behaviour. My symptoms include:

    - not always riding within cycle lanes, expecting to be
treated as a vehicle rather than an obstacle, and other
    such unreasonable behaviour
    - signing up for bike maintenance classes
    - thinking about maybe one day possibly perhaps getting some
    more cycling-appropriate clothing
    - writing to the council about cycle parking (lack of)
    - contacting my MP about the helmet bill
    - having a conversation with my otherhalf to see if we
could do without a car (we can't for now, but in the
    future ... ?)
    - having vague far-fetched day dreams about one day going on
cycle touring holidays (may take some years to acheive the
necessary state of fitness and the necessary ££ for decent
bikes instead of our current cheapo hybrids and for son-and-
heir to learn to ride without stabilisers, but a girl can
    dream ... )
    - becoming aware of the mysterious worlds of bibs and bents
(tho I could probably have done without the bibs,
    particularly some of the pictures)

I have gone from being a normal bike-gathering-dust-in-the-
hall kind of person, to the kind of person who might one day
be known as a cyclist. As of now, I am at the interim fat-girl-on-
bike stage. Most of my bike riding is short local trips but
as the weather gets better longer family bike rides will
    start happening.

So, this is by way of my de-lurk post. Hello.

Hello. Glad you de-lurked. I have to tell you, Audrey (sit
down, please, you're in for a shock), you already are the
kind of person known as a cyclist. There now, repeat after
me "My name is Audrey and I am a cyclist." That wasn't too
bad, was it ;-) I am fatbirdonabike and this summer am
planning my first *proper* cycle tour holiday, where the
bike is the main means of transport. I'm looking forward to
it and nervous at the same time. If I can do it, just about
    anyone can!

Credit card touring. You could start off with as little as
going to one end of a trail and riding a few miles to a
B&B, or on to the next village for the night etc. Very easy
to do bit by bit. Sprogs love going in child seats/ on
    trailer bikes.

I never thought of doing it for 'short hops' to start with
    but sounds like a plan.

Our sprog is well used to bike seat on dad's bike but is now
getting too big for it. We are trying to decide whether to
get a trailer bike tagalong thingummy, or one of those
things for attaching sprogbike to parentbike. The latter
appeals more, as we quite often cycle to local parks and it
would make it easy to take sprogbike along too.

I don't have a car. Never even had a lesson.

(I cycled down to my friend's house in Cardiff Bay
yesterday. Took me 1hr 25m to do the 14 miles, which isn't
great, but it was 15m quicker than my personal best, and

    I bought a Lidl-special tent a couple of weeks ago. I doubt

I can't do without access to one (sea kayaking in Scotland
and bikes=20 don't really go together well), but changing
personal culture from "I am =

going somewhere, I will drive" to "I am going somewhere,
    what's the best =

way" is a lot of the way to saving a great deal.

Think how many people have enjoyed cycling holidays over the
last=20 century on equipment much inferior to a basic modern
hybrid. You might=20 be able to go further and faster on a
=A3500+ tourer, but you don't *need= *=20 one. Cut your coat
according to your cloth and you can still have fun.

I have a giraffe which is like a trailgator but not as good
a design. It is OK for short trips (up to a few miles) but
can be a bit wearing on the rider in front if the baggage
can't or won't balance. There is a little play in the joints
which doesn't help. Otherwise it is great. We use it with a
16" wheel bike and it is fine. I'll be using it tonight to
take my 5yo son to his youth club (and he much prefers it to
    going by car.)

I'm trying to get him to balance on his own so I can then
have both the older two riding their own bikes and littlest
    (2yo) on the child seat/trailer.

Hello and welcome to the group. As you can probably tell
there are all sorts of riders here, in my experience most
are pretty friendly and helpful. Let us know how you get on,
tell us about your rides etc.

  19. | Excellent.. I got a somewhat stalling letter from my MP on
    | the helmet thing. Then again I did send him a 4 page
    | outline of why he shouldn't support the bill..

I sent mine a couple of paras, on the grounds that if he was
already well-acquainted with the facts then he wouldn't need
converting, and if he wasn't then perhaps it'd be easier for
me to decide what to emphasise in my follow-up letter for
maximum effect once I knew exactly what delusions he was
    labouring under.

I got a (pleasantly prompt, I must admit) reply written
under the impression that I was part of the "influential
cycling lobby" - which took me aback somewhat, as I don't
think I've ever influenced /anybody/ to cycle - but citing
the whole "safety" thing as a reason he would probably vote
in favour of the bill if he were in the House that day.
Which I carefully marked "important" in my mail reader for
later attention, then forgot all about. Oops.
