  1. You know, with the emphasis on health these days, one has to
weigh the choices for what fuel one takes aboard very
    carefully.

Like shoot. The Power Bar [censored] cashed in his chips at
51, and that running advocate of a few years back, Jim
Fixx, joined the Celestial Marathon at only 31 (or 32, I
    forget exactly).

And notwithstanding that the McMurdeBurger CEO bowed out
yesterday, Colonel Chicken was heading for a Century and the
Taco Bell guru celebrated 76 birthdays.

So Davey figured that since Power Bars are expensive
(relatively), hard to chew and digest, particularly in the
freezing cold we have had recently where I live, and taste
akin to soggy cardboard no matter what flavour is bought,
there has to be a reasonable substitute.

Having tried and abandoned GORP (Good Ole Raisins n'Peanutz)
30 years ago as not suitable for anything other than
shortish type rides/races/training-sessions, he was a bit
undecided what to do about the enroute refuelling situation.

Ergo he tried making his own oatmeal/raisin biscuits
(cookies if you prefer). Having followed Fannie Farmer to
the letter he decided that the results (disastrous) were not
worth the hassle and promised the Kithchen gods to limit his
culinary endeavours to boiling pasta and steaming rice and
    beans in future.

A lengthy tour of the food outlets reveals a plethora of
``healthy bars'' and most of which contain more garbage than
a McWhatzzit VeggieBurger. VeggieBurger? Right. Everybody
knows there's no meat in their hamburgers!!

But in a Dollar store, budget priced at $1CDN (no tax) for a
package of nine were some ``Lady Sarah Date Turnovers''.
Davey bought a few packages and tried them out on a ride.
They didn't freeze, were easy to chew and digest and were
    easy on the pocket.

The only problem was that they had a quite comprehensive
list of contents but no actual protein/carbohydrates/fat/etc
    breakdown.

Tracking down where the Turnovers came from, actually not
a very simple task, Davey e-mailed the Importer in
Montreal and was surprised to have a reply back within
five minutes regretting that it was 17:00 Friday but
    promising action on Monday.

Having tried to get Coke to give him some information on how
many bidons they used at the Tour de Farce last yesr and
been given the run around by Wankerz who had no idea what he
was talking about, Davey was sceptical.

But Surprise, Surprise. At 08:00 on Monday AM Davey had
the information he needed. And again, Surprise, Surprise.
The Lady Sarah Date Turnovers stack up very well against
Power Bars and similarly highly touted but also highly
    priced fuels.

Just a factual correction - Jim Fixx died at age 52 - still
rather young, but not quite like dropping dead of a heart
    attack at 32.

BTW, how about Fig Newtons? They already have the USCF
    endorsement, don't they?

Fig and date newtons are the food of choice around here.
They don't melt or get gooey, and even if slightly
squished are still edible. By the way, is Nutra-fig
    similar to Fig newtons?

Right you are. Sorry about that. Davey's research assistant
    was late this morning.

But Fig Newtons are OK too.

Davey was just looking to revamping his diet. It is in any
instance pretty Spartan, but he underwent some testing
recently and found that his HDLs are a little low. It seems
that, according to the learned Doctor, he has a 10% chance
of suffering a Stroke or Heart Attack within the next 10
years. So, there being nothing else giving cause for alarm
(LDLs, ECG, Pee in da Bottle, B12, etc., etc) he was
researching what he could do to up the count a little
    without resorting to medication.

The real joke about the Doctor's prognosis is that, having
regard to Davey's current age, he could predict himself with
almost 99% confidence that he won't be around 10 years from
    now anyway.

Also Fixx had a congenital heart problem and didn't die from
    diet related heart problems.

Somewhat similar Marlene. Check with Cadel Evans. He
    promotes them.

But Nutra Fig bars are somewhat akin to Power Bars. They
come packaged similarly, cost $2 Kanuckbucks each (approx)
and give you 220 KCals per bar.

    i eat fig bars too.

i have made my own energy cookies out of:

coconut raisons walnuts almonds raison bran cereal pancake
mix frozen blueberries eggs oil flour salt sugar almond milk

i mostly just added stuff i like to eat for breakfast. i was
thinking thick chewy pancakes when i made that recipe up.
the problem was that my 12 year son old kept eating them all
before i could take them out with
me. so now i buy boring fig bars.

    Hoomerous.

I can't eat Powerbars, due to alergies, but don't miss them
really. Impossible to unwrap after sitting in a jersey
pocket for a couple hours on a hot day. Clif bars have
gotten much better and with a wrapper end slit off works
    quite well.

    Hi,

I to have nut allergies as do 5% of the population. I get
jealous when I see my fellow riders whip out Powerbars and
eat them, while I have to trek over to the corner store and
buy whatever [censored] they happen to sell !!

Is there any good commercial substitutes for Powerbars
    without nuts ??

    Thank you

What kind of nuts are in powerbars? I can't eat pistachios
    or cashews.

Fixx did have clogged arteries from cholesterol. Of course
    some of that is hereditary.

Fig newtons. Available everywhere. Cheap. Packed with energy
that gets there every bit as fast as a powerbar.

Also, Fig Newmans, if you want that little extra guarantee
of wholesomeness or organic goodness. (They taste a little
different, but when you've been hammering for a couple hours
    everything tastes like mana.)

Several of the Clif bars are nut free, other than trace
amounts. I wish they would just do a production facility
that would be 100% nut free, though I only have a problem
with peanuts. Still, it's nice that they are free of dairy,
    which helps a lot.

    Stupid allergies...

I'll put in a vote for Clif bars. They're the closest thing
to real food, and actually quite tasty. If they're nut
and/or dairy free, so much the better.
