  1. Do most of you think stretching is necessary? I've seen a
study that showed no difference in injury frequency between
stretchers and non-stretchers. Personally, I hate to stretch
and think it might be unnecessary.

  2. my bode now seems to do fine with light stretch. karate
ones or long hard. I need rest time day or 3 or 5...is
neede. so I just when warm and tired only.and I can do more
then most and not as much as some...I need a help to learn
more on begin running after near 18 month since run
    tips...... my opinion.

A year ago, when the paper in the British Journal of
Medicing concluding that stretching was worthless was
published, I did a medline search for stretching for injury
prevention. I could not find a single reference showing that
stretching reduced injuries (but I found several that said
that it did not reduce injury). There are some who would say
that stretching lengthens muscle fibers and improves
flexability, but the fastest runners are also the least flexable--
so once again, no evidence that stretching does anything
useful for runners. An entirely avoidable waste of time in
my opinion, unless you have a specific injury that requires
attention to promote healing (i.e., ITB, piriformis, PF).

A warmup, however, IS important: to warm up the muscles
so that they produce less lactate, and to get muscles
used to running faster. A warmup does not require
    stetching, however.

I wonder if studies have been made that take into
account age and running experience. A 25 year old that
runs well under 30 min. for 5K might be very different
and not need stretching while an occasional runner at
    age 55 might need it.

I do know that at age 55 I got runners knee. A physical
therapist showed me how tight legs were screwing me up.
    Stretching loosened everything up.

this injury thing is a straw man. how else will you remain
flexible into your senior years? so stretch. i wish i had.
