  1. Hi, I'm going to be walking the London section of the Thames
path in just over a weeks time. I've got a book on it, but
how well is it signposted throughout the city? Also, the
book says that a section by the Dome isn't open yet - though
I'm sure I remember walking part of it a few months ago.
Anybody got any ideas? And any advice in general on walking
this city part would be welcome. I'm aiming to get from the
Thames Barrier to Windsor; I've got a good week to do it in,
but I'm going to be working three of those days.

Generally, very well, at least on the south side, I don't
imagine the North bank would be very different.

There is a path round the dome now, I'm not sure when this
part opened. There is a tall metal fence between the dome
and the river though, so you don't get good views of the
dome. A shame to see it still lying unused.

If you're starting this coming week, remember the marathon
is on this Sunday so you're going to have problems walking
    part of it then!

I started walking the Thames Path this year, starting from
the barrier I've now got as far as Henley-on-Thames. I've
walked it in these stages (rough mileage estimates).

Thames Barrier - Greenwich (4.5 miles) Greenwich - The
London Eye (7.5 miles) The London Eye - Putney (8 miles)
Putney - Richmond (8 miles) Richmond - Hampton Court (8
miles) Hampton Court - Staines (12 miles) Staines - Windsor
    (8 miles) Windsor - Bourne End (11 miles) Bourne End - Henley-on-
    Thames (11 miles)

You could easily combine the first two stages into the first
day. After that I'm not so sure.

One advantage of this part of the Thames though is that
you're never far from good transport links, so you don't
really have to aim to finish anywhere and can just stop when
you've had enough. Being next to the river, the path is also
flat and so easy going, although it is almost 100% walking
    on tarmac paths until Putney.

To be honest, apart from Greenwich, there is not an awful
lot to see between the barrier and Tower Bridge - there is
a lot of walking through some industrial sites and
    derelict land.

I have some photos I've taken when walking the path so far

Nice photos Jon, that ancient old pub at Chertsey Bridge,

The south side does look more interesting for most of the
route, so I'll probably be sticking to that.

I was right then. I remember the news stories about it's
going to be used for this, no it's going to be used for
that. With the amount of ideas you'd have thought they'd
have done something with it by now.

No I'll be starting one week after that, and I'll probably
be watching at least some of the marthon on tv whilst
    catching up on work.

To be honest I'm fairly used to walking those sort of

probably be aiming for a little longer stages.

I find that sort of walk quite interesting actually - a
change from green hills and mud doesn't do any harm. And
I can only take so many photographs of fields before
    losing interest.

The Thames Path starts at Dartford.

The bit around the Dome has been opened about this time four
    years ago.

you cant get lost, but make a point of taking alleys to get
as near to river as possible at all times, there are places
the signage does not take you as close as you can get and
yobs have turned a lot of signs round anyway.

Windsor to source takes a week. I haven't done the London

I think this is what we are talking about:- "A 16km/10 mile
eastwards extension to the path, opened early in 2001,
continues from the Barrier to connect with the London LOOP
at Erith. This section is not officially designated as part
of the National Trail and is waymarked with its own Thames
    barge logo"

so not the Thames path, but the "Thames path extension"

    at p-t-cook.freeserve.co.uk01jpg Thankfully
the rest of the loop isn't that bad. I haven't actually

I have only cycled the Thames Path between the Barrier and

delight and parts are less pleasant. Burnt out Ford Escorts
