  1. Ok, I think I've got a situation that will be new to most of
you. Bear in mind, I find this whole thing very funny, so
feel free to simply laugh at the irony.

A couple of months ago I started seeing doctors about two
separate problems I'm having - my jaw freezes or can be
extremely painful to open at times, and sleep apnea.
Initially, the person for the sleep apnea wanted to give me
a mouth piece to sleep in that would hold my jaw back which
would somehow make the airway smoother and the jaw doctor
wanted to give me a mouthpiece to sleep in that would pull
my jaw forward. The sleep apnea doctor also wanted me to
lose weight which is what prompted me to start WW, but I
digress. You see the conflict in remedies these doctors
    initially recommended I'm sure.

So I got the doctors on the phone with each other because it
turns out that an option for both problems is a single
surgery. The doctors agree that it would take very little
modifying of the standard jaw procedure to cure the sleep
apnea at the same time. 2 birds with one stone! Rock on!

Why I thought you guys might get a laugh out of this -

I'm assuming that during the 4 weeks or so it will take to
recover, my mouth will be somewhat immobolized. I'm
expecting to be on WW for about a year and a half before I
reach my goal which means there's a good chance this
surgery will fall in the middle of that (I have to get
orthodontal work before they can perform the surgery). So a
few months from now, right when I'm getting into the groove
of changing lifelong habits, I'm going to probably be stuck
on a month or so of a pureed/liquid diet! That better be a
    real Whoosh week!

  2. the good news here is that you can work extra hard until then and during
your wired phase you can consider it a jump start. If I were you I would be
trying protein powders now and perhaps some liquid recipes so that when the
time comes you are prepared and don't fall off the wagon because you get too
hungry or the nutrition tastes too nasty, best of luck, Lee

  3. Sounds like challange coming up. Start collecting recipes of
pureed soups etc ready for when you need them. I wish you
all the best for a speedy recovery. Michelle Ozzie in

  4. My step-son had his jaw wired shut for 6 weeks several years
ago. I can't remember how much weight he lost during that
time but it was significant. (he needed to lose it anyway)
He survived on Instant Breakfasts, soups and anything else
we could puree in the blender. It can be done with a lot of
    pre-planning and a good blender.

Losing weight cured my snoring almost completely. It may be
good just to review whether there are any other options once
you have lost a bit of weight. I use slimfast/protein powder
for breakfast. Very liquid, and it tastes yuck, but it gets
me through the morning better than anything else I've tried
so far (I know that 'real' food would be better, but I'm NOT
a morning person, and making a breakfast every day isn't
going to last). Protein powders are cheap, digestible, and
disappear into anything liquid to give you the protein
you'll probably be missing. Let us know how you get on

Talk to your oral surgeon about how long your jaw will be
immobilized -- it may not be as long as you think it is.

If it is going to be more than a few days, then talk to your
doctor about a consult with a nutritionist. If your doc
prescribes a consult, your insurance may pay for it. Even if
your insurance doesn't pay, it may be worthwhile.

I just know if it were me, I'd be tempted to play the "poor
me" card and decide on fast food milkshakes for every meal.
Since a MacDonald's chocolate shake has 13 points, this way
    lies program disaster.
