Steve,
It could be either! Thoughts below are if someone is going
to get it. If you are shipping it see my final note.
Okay the basemaps of the USA versions are USA basemaps so
they will not give you any functionality here in Europe. But
then you have to decide if that is important to you.
If you buy a mapping unit such as the Vista or the MAp 76
range or the 60C range etc then you will not have any
mapping that is of use in Europe so its a waste of money
going to the map version. HOWEVER! If you add to the basic
unit streetmapping for Europe (metroguide), then you can use
the main memory up to its maximum and you will have
streetmapping detail and the basemap makes no difference.
BUT The basemap is the map that you will see when you zoom
out beyond about a 3 miles display scale so when you zoom
out then you will not see any roads.
To be honest if you are looking at buying the 60C or CS then
the basemap on these is e degraded version of the normal
Euro basemap and is almost worthless - so if I was buying a
Garmin in the USA it would be a 60 or 60CS. (CS has
barometer and compass). The memory on the 60 is 59mb so
plenty of room for the metroguide (buy this in the USA as
well) or for autorouting add the navigation kit (about $200)
with the City Select Software.
I wouldn't buy a car unit in the USA though if I were you
because by the time you have bought the European software -
which MUST be bought in the USA then its almost the same as
in Europe plus you have the pain of not having any display
of maps outside of the 3 miles zoom scale.
On all units you can load the worldmap into the memory and
this will give you just about the same basemap information
but takes precious memory space - with the handhelds there
is not much memory to play with.
So in summary - yes and no but if yes buy a 60C or CS for
the most 'international' 60c in usa about $380 in uk about
£340 CS about $420 in USA in UK about £420
Final Note to those who want to ship it to UK. Add about 27%
to the cost of the US Dollar price as there is a cumulative
additional %age as follows: Most online stores will add 3%
for credit card insurance (but this makes cumulative even
higher!), add cost of shipping, then add 3% of the cost of
product plus shipping for duty, then add 17.5% of the cost
of the unit PLUS shipping PLUS duty = about 27%
EU customs now charge above on all imported goods having
value over £18.00

Are the garmin GPS sold there any different to the ones
here in the U.K ?
What I am basically asking is if he gets me one of the top
end models with Barometer, compass etc will it be of no
use in the U.K or a bargain not to be missed.
Thanks in advance
