  1. I recently had a nasty cold ... 2+ weeks, that combined with
work kept me off my bike for 4 weeks ... first group ride
back and I was SUCKING WIND!! Badly ... is it normal to lose
THAT much fitness in that short of a time??

In a word ... YES! And the older you get, the worse it gets.

Many aspects of your fitness weren't really lost. It will
take you about 3 weeks to get back to where you were. Maybe
less if you were tired before the break.

Yes. You need to work back into it, and possibly that will
include NOT going on group rides. It's easier to obtain your
goals and to train without a group goading you into riding
beyong what are your current limits. Group rides/races are
sometimes a total antithesis to your training goals. Skip
them until you get your fitness back, and it should come
    back probably pretty quick.

  6. I had some bug back in January and took a couple weeks rest.
I felt pretty weird when I got back in the saddle, but rode
strong. IIRC back when I was mountain biking a break of 3 or
    more weeks would definitely tell.

    Hey,

First off, you were sucking wind back then, too. No,
seriously, groups are getting faster. It's not just the
normal springtime gains either. More and more guys are on
the juice. The use of EPO in amateur local group rides has
increased 37% in the last two months. This data is from
research by RBR, funded by Merck.

    Thanks, Ronde Chumpion
