evidence on helmets and concludes that the case is not made
is not making an "informed choice" but anyone who believes
the scaremongering and dodgy statistics used to promte
helmets, is.

I wonder if he was aware when making his "informed choice"
that helmet use is associated worldwide with higher injury
rates? Or is that the wrong sort of information? Perhaps the
recent report on helmets worsening torsional forces leading
to the worst kind of brain injuries was also the wrong kind
of information. But the report which concludes that helmets
are the reason white middle class children on bike paths
suffer fewer injuries than poor black children riding on
roads, well, that would be the right kind of information,
obviously. 46,000 die annually from physical inactivity -
wrong sort of information. Ten child deaths annually due to
cycling head injuries - wrong sort of information. Helmet
compulsion would save the NHS £2bn annually (1/3 more than
it spends on all treatments for children) - right sort of
information.

It's a tricky business, this making of informed choices.
Even the Government is ill-informed - it says it knows of no
case where cyclist safety has improved with increasing
helmet use. No wonder the British Medical Association are so
ill-informed that they oppose compulsion. As do the Royal
College of General Practitioners. And the Association of
Cycle Traders (who sell the things). And British Cycling.
And the National Cycling Strategy Board. And the main UK
cycling organisation, CTC.

I think the predictably ill-informed "Ian, UK" must have
been using one of those irregular verbs: I make an informed
choice, you are persuaded, he follows the herd.

I'm waiting to see whether my own contribution is selected.
I wanted to ask Martlew why he is proposing a law that would
inevitably shorten vastly greater numbers of lives than it
could ever hope to save. I see Richard Burton got in. Well
done that man.

Thanks. I'm somewhat surprised that they selected my comment
from the hundreds they must have received. On the other
hand, I can't get the local paper (Bristol Evening Post) to
publish a letter pointing out the errors and omissions in
their article about Ar' Eric and 'is Bill.
