Dear Peter,

that is a terrible fate. "Alternative" treatments are not
known. The most important question is, if the pancreas can
be cut out.

The damage to the pancreas results in 2 different
consequences :

1. insulin production disturbed or destroyed
2. digestion enzymes no longer produced
