    ON the way to THE race, I thought about my prospects. Was a
    THIRD place in the age group possible? "No," I shrugged.
    "Not this DAY. Not with Steve here -- HE always beats me."
    But on further reflection, my spirits ROSE AGAIN. Age group
    awards went four deep here, I realized ...
