  1. Ok ... I've read the live reports. I haven't watched the
tape I made of the OLN "coverage." Based on comments I've
seen here, I don't think it answers the question and I still
don't know what actually happened to George. It seemed one
minute he was right there and the next he was down 0:45. One
minute he's with Museew and the next minute Museew's
flatted, gotten a wheel and Hincapie's still not there.

Anyone got the scoop on how/where George lost it? (Try to
resist dumbass comments. I just want to know if he flatted
or took a wrong turn or got held up by a train or
    something.)

    Thanks, Bob C.

I have no more info than you, but from listening to George after the race and thinking about the race coverage I belive that Hincapes break was caught and a large group formed with 8 or so riders. Then there was a move from that group which George could not keep up with. Then Museuw got his flat, but George was already dropped. I think the interview at the end of the coverage makes it clear, but the coverage of that section of the race was shakey.

Based on a post-race interview with Frankie, George said he
just plain ol' ran out of gas.

Boy, it is nice to see that lots of other people are as
confused as I am. Phil said something like, "Now George
knows that he will finish no less than third." OLN goes
to a commercial break and Museew it leading with no sign
    of George.

There's a slightly odd comment on Graham Watson's pages
as well about the break with Gorgeous George being the
race-winning one...(...not to mention that guys called
George these days shouldn't make comments about running
    out of gas...)

Awesome result for Roger Hammond...it seems like he's been
around forever and he really deserves a podium spot.

After the Boonen, Hincapie, and Flecha break was caught, the
leaders, now about 8 or so, entered the Carrefour de l'Arbre
together, Museeuw taking the lead, Hincapie in 4th place.
They exited together, then entered section 3B, the Gruson.
It was during this section that the group split a little,
with Museeuw, Backstedt, Hammonds, Cancellara, Hoffman, and
possibly Hoste (?) in front, followed at 3 or 4 seconds by
Boonen, Flecha, and Hincapie, who were paying for their
earlier effort. At this point, PVP was tearing through the
chasers, having flatted and chasing back, solo, through the
caravan, at perhaps 35 seconds to the Museeuw group. Very
    impressive.

Because Hincapie and Boonen were 3 or 4 seconds back of the
lead group, and Motocam 2 was following the group behind,
they disappeared from view for a couple of minutes, which is
why none of the analysts could exactly place where he was.

I don't think he deserves a podium spot - he earned it.
This seems like a big jump forward for him. I was never
really sure in the past if his team was strong enough or
if they just weren't very supportive of him in
particular, but maybe this result will make a difference
for him in that regard. It's a great result. I'm really
    stoked for Backstedt, as well.

  10. like i said before the race began. he just doesnt have what
it takes to win PR. he could be a super domestique, just not
    a champion of PR.

He had a pretty good go of it this time with Boonen and
Flecha. That could have turned into a race winning break.
Maybe they needed Hoste there to stop Lotto from chasing,
although I think it was Wesemann who dragged everyone up. I
was surprised at how quickly they were caught.

Baldato was there at the end, although the team only started
with five riders (Marcus Ljungqvist was still a bit off
after last week's crash). Hammond was alone too. But Lotto
and Quick.Step comprised nearly a third of the big selection
after Arenberg, and they ended up with nothing.

  12. the woulda-coulda-shoulda with george is just getting old.
after watching boonen work for him and then GH getting
dropped it made me change my whole outlook on his PR
chances. top5 to top 10 guy, hell yes. not top 2 though,
    help or no help.

he would do better going for the rolling TDF stages that
have a bit of an incline to break the group. too bad that
    wont happen before 2005.

I'm not trying to make excuses for him, even though he beat
a (supposedly) better Boonen in a sprint this time. My point
was that he did attack, and not just follow wheels, which
has been a common criticism of him in the past. He also
attacked in Flanders = good as well. You don't know if a
break will work unless you try one, and it was a good time
to go, and he was with good company.

As for the future, who knows? Certainly no-one in RBR got
close to predicting the P-R podium. As Museeuw said,
everyone's so close at the top now that no-one really
    stands out.

Don't agree with you about George just getting old. He's 30.
That's when Museeuw won the first of his 3 P-Rs.

Look at the last 10 winners of P-R and their ages-

Magnus Båcksted 29 (a relative baby) VAN PETEGEM 33 Johan
MUSEEUW 36 Servais KNAVEN 31 Johan MUSEEUW 34 Andrea TAFI 33
Franco BALLERINI 33 Frédéric GUESDON 29 Johan MUSEEUW 30
    Franco BALLERINI 30

In George's own (pre P-R) words, he's got a little less
juice when it comes to sprints because he's been working on
his climbing, and it shows. Hincapie is amazing when he
becomes the first stege to launch Armstrong up a mountain.
It seems that he always pulls much longer than expected.

I think when Armstrong retires, we'll be able to see whether
or not George has that little extra he seems to be searching
for in the classics. After all, when was the last time
Museeuw made preparing for the TdF and then giving 100%
there every day (not just trying for the occasional stage
win), a centerpiece of his season?

    Silly me.

You're not alone. When Boonen announced pre-race that he
was working solely for Museeuw this P-R, I assumed that his
break was an effort to drag down a couple of guys with him.
It took Hincapie and Flecha out of the running. That could
explain how such a "dangerous break" could suddenly wind up
back in the group without any of us (including Eurosports,
France2, OLN, dutch tv) seeing it coming, With PVP out of
the group having flatted, and most of the group (not
Museeuw of course) trying to keep the 3 man break from
succeeding, Boonen could have stopped doing his share when
he figured he tired out George and Flecha enough to no
longer be a threat to Museeuw. Darned good tactics too.
    Shame Museeuw flatted 🙁
