Delivery charge question

gas and insurance. The delivery guy doesn't keep it.

Chances are the delivery kid gets paid by the hour, same as
waitpersons (less than minimum wage) and counts on the
tips... that $1.50 is added into the bill and management
keeps it for providing the service (maybe insurance costs
have gone up, gas sure has). The thing to do is to check if
other restaurants with delivery service in your area have
similarly changed their methods, then you can decide if you
want to change where you do business, but it's not fair to
stiff the delivery kid. I think $1.50 delivery charge is
very reasonable (costs more to drive a car around the
block), you can always retrieve your food yourself.

The restaurant prices haven't increased that I noticed. Has
nothing to do with that. I'll ask the guy next time, and
I'll ask the restaurant to find out the real story.

The restaurant prices haven't increased that I noticed.
Has nothing to do with that. I'll ask the guy next time,
and I'll ask the restaurant to find out the real story.

The restaurant is using your buck-fifty to offset the
overhead of whatever pittance they're paying the delivery
kid. You can pretty much be assured that even if the
delivery kid drives his own car and pays for fuel and
insurance himself, he'll never see a dime of the "delivery
charge" over his normal wage.

The ads I've seen, when I lived in the states, did give a
mileage allowance. The restuarant uses the delivery charge
for that. Here in Honduras, they charge for the containers
also - pizza boxes, etc

I used to deliver food when I worked at a takeout restaurant
while I was in college. The delivery fee was simply to pay
for car expenses. Most food delivery people use their own
car, and thus have to pay for gas and wear and tear on the
car, plus auto insurance. The $1.50 helps defray those
overhead costs. A tip is still appreciated.

I don't think so. When I delivered food, the delivery charge
went to me to cover my driving expenses. The restaurant got
none of that charge. Perhaps this varies from one restaurant
to the next though.

I think next time I called, I'd ask whether the driver or
the restaurant gets the delivery charge, and base the tip on
the information received.

For Heaven's sake don't punish the delivery guy. He depends
on tips. And they work very hard. You should always tip
them. If you can't afford to give them a buck or two, you
probably shouldn't be ordering take-out food to be
delivered! Cook for yourself if you can't afford the
alternative!

I still tip the delivery person in instances like this. But
then again, I've always been a generous tipper.

to stiff the delivery guy! She just wonders if they get the
$1.50 delivery charge or not. By the way, she's also not
"jealous" of people who have cell phones and I'm pretty
darned sure she can afford to order take-out.

Okay, I thought I was clear. I understood that the tip *was*
a delivery charge. I understood that when I asked someone to
drive food to my house, that it would cost above and beyond
the actual cost of the food. I have *no* problem with that,
it's like, duh! I tip the pizza guy, too! Whoo Wee! And
there is no delivery charge.

I even tip people who bring food to me in restaurants. Alert
the media.

My question was, if they went to a delivery charge, is that
the tip because other people didn't think to tip, or
something else. I was asking for the group's experience in
this matter.

Funny, people would laugh at you or be insulted in other
countries if you tipped them. Because it's included in the
price of the meal.

No, I would not stiff anyone, oddly, THAT'S WHY I ASKED what
other's thoughts were, not to be called names.

Please continue the tip. I don't know if the kid gets the
money or a gas allowance, but at the cost of driving today,
he is not getting rich.

It has been 40 years since I did delivery for a drug store.
Only thing I got for use of my car was the tips. I quit
after two weeks as it was not worth the hassle. Even with
the charge thrown today at the price of gas, insurance, etc,
