I rarely do these rides as I work 40 miles away and live 5
minutes walk from the shops. I try to keep my riding for
pleasure rather than necessity.

Instant water is a luxury. Saves having to find it. Ditto
prepared food - though in season there may be equally great

On any ride my digital camera would be classed as a luxury item because it is big and boxy, but my Mobile Phone is an essential item that I carry on every ride.

On longer rides I'd carry a few medical things like sterile wipes, bandage and lint dressing, plasters, swiss army knife (for small scissors, blade and tweezers) and stuff 'em all in my CamelBak (which some might consider an un-necessary affectation, but I drink about 3 litres on a 70 mile ride so I find it handy).

(canteen food is cack), book to read at lunch (should just
