  1. What is the fastest way (other than the obvious trading
up) to take some weight off a Giant Boulder SE for around
    $300 canadian?

The other snide answers aside, here's mine - isn't "Giant
Boulder" an odd name for a product targetted at a customer
    base full of weight weenies?

Brad: I wonder if it makes a great deal of sense to spend
money to try to take weight off an already heavy bike. The
type of bike the Boulder is, Mountain/Mix, uses relatively
inexpensive (and relatively heavy) components. To replace
wheels or components with lighter ones wouldn't gain you
anything significant. To achieve a worthwhile weight loss
might take some serious dollars, but then you still have a
    somewhat heavy frame.

Might I sincerely suggest you ride your Boulder and enjoy
it, meanwhile saving money (start with the $300cdn that
you've budgeted for your weight loss) for a new lighter
bike, later. You also will be in a better position to know
what you want, need and like. And at the end of the riding
season there are some fantastic deals to be had as dealers
try to clear their showroom floors.

Depends on how you ride it, but a good way of losing weight
is to get some better wheels/lighter tyres/tubes.If you
chuck it off kerbs/ride over logs, then putting lightweight
wheels on may not be a good idea. Alan.

Alternatively, if you ride mostly road, get a set of slick
and you will notice a big improvement. I'm using Avocet
26x1.25 and with a new set of grade 25 ball bearings, my
heavy 30+lb "costco special" really rolls....

    Diet.

Remember the mantra: Low Weight: Low Cost: High
    Strength - Pick 2

Drill out all but a thin sliver of aluminum on the cranks.
Cut large holes in the frame. Grind down the thickness of
the handlebars. Remove the seat and seat post (actually,
that saves weight, doesnt cost a thing, and would probably
not affect strength at all.... go for it!)

  10. Glad to see that you guys are so concerned with the health of a new guy on
the Newsgroup. Just to let you know I took it into the bike shop yesterday
and put on some lightweight triple box aluminum rims. That and the scale at
the gym told my I'm down 5 lbs from where I was when I started riding last
year. Thanks again for your concern. 🙂

    fastest or most economical?

Dieting certainly comes to mind where you can lose weight in
terms of 'bike weights', where 1 BW=20 lbs.
