Not sure how much there is to update on that matter; though
EC would benefit from small updates on some technical
points, riding in traffic is pretty much the same now as it
was ten years ago.

As for resources, Allen's Street Smarts is available online
at <http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/>. Urban Bikers'
Tricks & Tips (ISBN 0-9651728-0-5) also covers riding in
traffic, along with many other useful subjects.

Finally, keep in mind that EC covers much more than EC;
sections 29-32 are only about 50 pages long in total. If you
ever lay a hand on a copy, it's certainly worth reading.

Most states publish a handbook for cyclists. The better ones
borrow heavily from Oregon's manual.

I figured if I said that, some old-timer would retort that
traffic was much nicer/kinder than it is now, people
didn't have cellphones, cyclists had to ride uphill both
ways, etc. <g>

All those things are true, except the riding uphill both
ways. The point is, the principles for dealing with it
are the same.

Street Smarts is excellent. Sounds like exactly what's
needed here.

Urban Bikers' Tricks & Tips is a good read, but I recommend
it only with hesitation. Here's the problem: for many
traffic situations, the author (Dave Glowacz) gives what he
calls "Sly Bikers Only!" tips, highlighted by a cartoon "Sly
Biker" with a devilish grin, pointing to his head as if to
say "Boy, am I smart!"

Well, that "Sly Biker" is often a real ass. As an example,
"The Shortcut Left Turn" involves dodging left, riding north
in the southbound lane, riding up onto the sidewalk, etc.
before turning left. IMHO, Glowacz was irresponsible to
print that sort of nonsense.

Probably, that's the problem with giving advice on
traffic cycling.

Maybe it worked for Glowacz. Maybe it didn't. I've
heard of him.

Is he still up and running?

I know EC is boring and many here see it as a trite answer
to a sophomoric question. But it really is the fastest, most
efficient way to achieve a skill level that will at least
put you in competition.
