After seeing the link, I just had to ask "why".....now I
know "why not". Below is a bit of copy from one of the
"sponsors". I'm *not* planning to participate.

    From "Artists Against War"
    9monkeys.orgwisehallapril f.htm Why A Naked Bike
Ride? Every day we are bombarded with countless messages
demanding our obedience to the corporate dictates of a
consumption dependent society. Little regard is paid to the
future of our planet and generations left with a legacy of
    waste and environmental contamination.

How many countless times each day do our media masters spin
    the same message:

Unless you buy this, you are not worthy. Unless you look
like this you should be ashamed.

By cruising naked down the spending frenzy capitals of the
world, we are saying.NO! ...a fancy new car is not a mark
of distinction. NO! ...I am not ugly just because I don't
have the body of an anorexic model. NO! ...I don't need to
spend thousands of dollars on pretentious clothes to create
    a fake image.

Beauty and strength come from within, money can't buy true
wealth, only empty images. (But it can buy clothes to cover
    up your ugly ass!)

You disagree with all of these points? I'm sure a lot of
these people are going to lean a lot further left than I do,
but the stuff you cited is bang on in my book. Riding around
nekkid looks a lot more like living than the imitation of
    life you can buy yourself.

Well, you need to take shrinkage into account there.
Probably a little chilly just swingin' in the breeze
    like that.

I think it's a cool idea, although I question the comfort
and safety of participating. But more power to those who do.
Somehow I don't think it would fly here in small-town
Western Colorado. Even Spandex is considered obscene by some
of the old timers, and I don't think removing that (and any
other) fabrics would make them feel any differently. I'd
also feel a bit vulnerable (like one of those naked dreams -
not the good ones) riding up Main au natural and realizing I
was one of only three or four participants as the local
    authorities ready the fire hoses...

I didn't give it enought thought to agree or disagree. I
just think trying to make a political statement by riding
around nekkid is pretty damn funny! Pretty stupid too, but
    funny either way.

Well just how does one make a political statement,
    professor?

Enlighten us. Tell us how it's done.

To me this just seems like a low-volume critical mass, but
    with an element of humor.

How does Joe Chevy feel about it when a real critical mass
goes down, and he can't get through an intersection for 5
turns of the traffic lights because of cyclists clogging the
road? Then how does he feel about it when it happens for one
traffic light cycle, and there are 19-year-old girls riding
    slowly past, au natural?

Seems like a very effective way to make a political
    statement to me.

    YMMV.

There are lots of means of political expression, as I'm sure
you are aware. I too think this is funny, very funny.
However, the passage posted in my OP was funny primarily
because the folks were taking the thing WAY to seriously.
Riding your bike can be a great political statement, riding
your bike nekkid and expecting to be taken seriously is just
plain silly. That's all I'm trying to say. Real political
action and naked bike riding are pretty much oxymoronic.
Having something to say is fine. Saying it without any
clothes on may attract more attention, but it doesn't
contribute to the weight of the message.

He'll go "WTF?" and then go home and watch TV. Anyone with
any serious intellect will chalk it up to a bunch of radical
wannabes who cant distinguish political speech from an
illiterate grunt. Absolute confusion of message and medium.
The mistaken impression that force of argument is enhanced
through form of delivery. It's funny. If folks wanna ride
nekkid, then great. If they think riding nekkid is the way
to promote a message, then I would suggest more credible
    means to do so.

So, people who think that the world is being run into the
ground should put on a suit and hold a press conference or
something? Which is the more futile gesture, riding nekkid
or calling a press conference that nobody will show up to?
Seems like the bike streakers at least get to have a slice
of fuggin' LIFE out of their futile gesture.

Excellent point. What was she trying to say? Hard to tell
from where I sit, but it's not hard to tell that she
wouldn't have gotten ANYBODY to hear it if she'd given a
    press conference. Fully clothed.

Don't really want to argue with you Tom, but I would ask
    you to think:

Is there *anything* that people should DO when they don't
like the way the world is going? You seem to say "yes,
something more dignified than riding nekkid" but you never
offer any examples of a better tactic.

So what should we do? Call a press conference? Go home, pop
a Coors Light and watch TV, maybe kick the dog later?

But she didn't say a damn thing! It was her [censored] that did
all the talking, and she probably still doesn't have a clue
what really happened. That whole scene is mere political
phenomenon, not any sort of statement. The real political
statements came afterwords by those who were primarily
    fully clothed.

Just cause I think naked biking is a silly way to express a
political message doesn't obligate me to offer alternatives.
C'mon, Tom you're obviously smarter than that, of course
there are other ways to express themselves politically. I
really don't think you need me to list off the available
options. Besides, I'm no political activist and if you
really want to know I'm sure you could manage to find a few
other methods of political expression . Try here:
    tinyurl.com2b29p . Riding nekkid is obviously a
valid form of political expression, I don't deny that. Just
because it's original doesn't mean I have to take it
seriously, though. I also fully support their right to
express their political views in a lawful manner. I just
think it's silly. Same thing with Nader and Sharpton -- just
cause they both run for President doesn't mean they should
be taken seriously. Bob Dornan is one on the other side of
the spectrum. The guy is dead serious and earnest in what he
says, but he's still an absolute caricature in the political
process. Naked riding is to political activity as canned
soup is to fine dining. Obviously you disagree, but that's
    how I see it.

I was just struck by the contrast between the spectacle of a
naked version of critical mass accompanied by the oh-so-
serious manifesto from the "artists against war." That's
all. Hey, they should go ahead and ride naked if it makes
'em happy. Regardless of that, it doesn't lend anymore
weight to the message. And I'll laugh at them, just like I
do most of the self styled "radicals" who confuse motion
    with progress.
