  1. Someone said that peanut butter can lower cholesterol. Could
anyone tell whether it is so? Thanks.

The best way to lower cholesterol is to take regular
moderate exercise and eat a varied eucaloric diet of
wholefoods. If this does not work, see your doctor for some
    drug therapy.

I'd love to hear your opinion. Does drug therapy to
lower cholesterol directly really help? I've seen
studies indicating rather small effects, in the order of
a 10% reduction in heart disease mortality in those
taking the drugs, i.e. if their risk for heart attack
would be say 33% in the next 5 years, statins may lower
that to 30%. It sort of fits along with the theory that
treating cholesterol is actually treating the symptom,
    not the root.

In "Dr Dean Orinish's Program For Reversing Heart Disease"
(Ballintine Books, NYC), there's a reference to "an excess
of violent and accidental deaths among the patients who took
cholerterol-lowering drugs in the Lipid Research Clinics
study..." and "...in the Helsinki study."

In the same chapter he seems to make a case that the number
of deaths by heart attack isn't lowered all that much (about
a percent) in people taking those drugs.

OTOH, that book is almost fifteen years old and the studies
cited would have to be at least a couple of years
older...so the drugs used then are might not be any of the
    drugs used today.

My doc put me on Zocor and my total cholesterol dropped from
258 to 147. Don't have the HDL/LDL numbers handy, but he was
happy with them. Haven't felt particularly accident-prone or
violent since starting the stuff...but I'd still like to get
off of it ASAP. To that end, I'm trying to incrementally
achieve something like the less-draconian of the lifestyles
    detailed on Ornish's book.

I was talking about genetic hypercholesterolaemia, not fat
    abnormality in fatfux.

    Hi Moosh,

I'm sorry. My question should have been in a new thread.
In any event the question stands and I'd like to hear
    your opinion.

    Thanks,

    Hi Chad

I'm no medical expert, so it puzzles me why you want my
    opinion on this.

    Nevertheless.....

I believe that drug therapy to lower genetic
hypercholesterolaemia is effective and worth doing. Last I
heard anyway. I know a fit skinny guy who has a huge
cholesterol problem and a family history of big problems. He
takes drugs for this and is hopeful of some respite from his
    familial problems.

I also believe from the latest I've heard that drug therapy
for fat metabolism problems in fat unfit folks is not worth
the downsides of the drugs taken.

As I said, exercise and weight normalisation is best for
all. If your blood lipids are still out of whack, see
    your doctor.
