I recently purchased a Specalized Sirrus Sport road bike, and highly delighted I am. Stumbled across this forum, an now time to as a few questions.
I cycle approx 140 miles a month mainly at weekends, I find that my legs are able to cope with most hill climbs I attempt, but I dont think I am loosing any weight.
Can I loose weight from my waist ie I like a few beers now and again?
My average cycling speed is approx 15mph.
What would be a good programme for an average cyclist to get fit?
I love to go on long rides 40 mile + once a week or is it better to do more short runs throughout the week.

I'm no expert, but my experience is that the more miles I clock up per week the easier it is to keep weight down. Usually this means 1-2 hour rides during the week, then 5-10 hours (total) on the weekend. It might take you a while to build up to that kind of time in the saddle but I'm pretty sure you'll notice the weight dropping off!

Thanks for your reply, that is a lot of saddle time, but also very interesting.

I'd try building up to about 100 miles a week. Or about 15-20 miles on your short rides 4 times a week and one long ride of 40 miles. Also, keep in mind that the general rule is that for weight loss to occur you have to have more calories going out than going into your body but that should be no problem with 100 miles a week. Don't try to start doing 100 miles a week all of a sudden, just build up to it over several weeks.

Also, another tidbit, there's no way to really be selective about where you lose fat, the body'll lose fat, but you don't get to decide from where it'll do the job.
