I'm planning on taking part in the "Bike The Drive" event in Chicago on May 30th. This is when they shut down Lake Shore Drive to cars and open it up to nothing but bikes. I'm wondering if anyone here has taken part in it the past two to three years, and if so, what are your thoughts / comments on it.
It's fun. Lots of bikes. Don't plan on setting any speed records. Enjoy a casual ride.

Why not just bike the Lake Shore bike path when it's not so crowded? Unless you're looking to be part of a "happening," it seems to be the bike path itself would be a much more enjoyable ride -- and much closer to the water, too. I did the Chicago Lake Shore Drive in June 2002 in the evenings. Very busy with joggers and bicyclist. Gets quiet after dark.

It makes May 30th a great day to ride in the western suburbs. All the Freds are busy clogging up LSD. We're planning on riding the Fox River Trail up to the Wisconsin border that day. :-)

Lots of fun, it is a happening! Funny thing is - it's hillier than you would expect! Refreshments, lots of good company.
At $35.00, Bike the Drive is a big rip-off. If you decide to do the ride, I'd suggest pirating it. Bring your own water and snacks, don't stop at the Chicago Bike Federation's sags. It's a public thoroughfare so it's ok to ride on the street.
