  1. Is the orientation of a threadless stem reversible? IOW, if the stem has a -16 degree angle, can I turn it over and have a 16 degree rise? The reason I ask is because I want to raise my bars significantly and I don't see much choice for positive rise stems.

No. The handlebars point to the front.

Just breakin' your balls, buddy. Flip it right over. You
might notice many stems have graphics printed on both sides
of the long-wise axis (how's that for a [censored] description?)
    in anticipation of flipflopping.

Yes, that's the idea. It's the main way of adjusting the
    height with these stems.

  4. I have seen it said that some stems should not be reversed,
but I don't know which ones, or how much credence to place
in that assertion. I always purchase stems which have the
lettering both ways up, such as you can see at
    cinelli.itSOLIDO.html. I
figure that if the manufacturer does that, then they're
expecting that the stem will be used in either orientation.

_ Check out the Dimension stems from any shop that deals
with QBP. You can get 45 degree rise in many lengths.

No, the handlebars will do that after I reverse them. :-)

Some early threadless stems had the upper surface cut at an
oblique angle. An example is the Syncros ahead stem at the
    bottom of this long-obsolete page:

    bikepro.comsyncros.html

You also needed a special top cap to use it right way
    up, AFAIK.

Ungainly? I think, "erect" would be the correct wording.
