I have a Vista and UK Roads and Recreation. I can load about
60% OF the UK R & R at one time, but it is of little use for
walking other than telling you where the nearest road is!
The rivers are shown, but not with exact accuracy in my
experience. It is fine for use as a road map, if your
eyesight is good enough for the fine resolution of the
screen. :-)

None of the software is any use for walking. You will still
need the relevant IGN sheet maps. The software only shows
roads (and not every minor one from my limited testing).

Driving; up to you. There are test pages for most Garmin
products on their website which allows you to play with the
software to see if you think the mapping is sufficient help.
I'd save the pennies, buy a Michelin road atlas, programme
in your own key waypoints in advance of the trip, and just
use the GPS to give you grid positions.

I think you mean Ordnance Survey ? IGN is France AFAIK (tho
they may do UK).

UK road signs are pretty good - I don't feel the need to use
my Vista for on-road work.

Where are you planning to walk ? I have detailed Vista FP
maps for a few areas.

We plan to walk around the Settle, Clapham, 3 peaks area for
a few days and then head over by Rieveux(sp?) abbey. Our
exact walks are not determined yet and we are open to
suggestion but are mostly looking for 7-12 mile loops.
