Plenty of "studies" to show that reducing weight, especially for a short triathlon on a flat course, will only reduce your time a little. A more aero wheel will increase your speed much more. However, by more aero, I'm talking trispoke at least or a full 58mm rim or rear disk, etc. Now, I'm a weight weenie and I want both (which can be had, but then you are talking a serious investment - probably more than your current bike). For example, A nice, lightweight set of Zipp Z4 wheels (Peter Reid raves about 'em) will run about $3,000. Even the similar Zipp 404s or 909 set with rear disc will run from about $1,300-$1,800. Are they worth the money? Absolutely not. Will they make you faster? John Cobb says about a minute and a half over a 40K bike leg. That's a lot for 90 secs - but I love mine!😄

    Better engine is cheaper.
