  1. Just fitted a new chain on my 8 speed Marin Sausalito, but
can't stop it hopping around in anything but the three
    largest rear rings.

Have adjusted the cable between both extremes but can't find
a way to stop this. It's going to go to the LBS shop in
desperation unless anyone has any bright ideas. There's no
appreciable wear on the rear or front rings by the way.

  2. New chain, old block. New block, old chain - NO.

New chain, new block - YES.

You should have done it sooner, then ;-)

Time for a new cassette / block.

Before anything, just check that the chain links are free.
The fact that the problem occurs only on the smaller cogs
could indicate that they are too tight as that is where they
    pivot most.

However the most likely reason is that the rear cogs are
worn (not always easy to see), and it is the smaller
ones that usually wear out first. The sooner you sort
    this the better.

The other possibility (As well as the very likely wear on
sprockets!) is that the chain is too long. A certain LBS
engineer, who shall remain nameless (Unless I'm asked) seems
to believe that all bikes, regardless of frame size, number
of chainrings, etc. require the same length chain. It is
possible that your rear mech is incapable of removing the
    slack from the smaller gears.

Although if you haven't replaced the cassette, it's probably
worth doing unless it's very new.
