It has been five months since I have been on a bike. I feel that my wrist injury has finally healed enough to the point I can rejoin you all in the greatest sport of our generation. I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous. Since starting mountain biking several years ago, I have never gone this long without riding. Fortunately, we have riding year-round here in Phoenix, AZ. Before this, the longest I went without biking was 1 month (during the hot season, I gave up). I know when I get out there on the trail I am going to be weak and out of breath, and enduring quite a bit of pain and suffering.
Any thoughts, good lucks, or words of encouragement for me?

Just take it easy on those first few rides; don't want to start out with a re-injury. Good luck & have fun!

Spend at least a couple weeks on the less challenging trails - nothing will discourage you faster than getting totally trashed halfway up a nasty climb. I guess I probably don't need to tell you to "ride early" now that it's starting to heat up (already!).

Well, I rode today, and first I must say that I haven't felt this good in a long, long time. Second, I was surprised at how well I did! I chose one of the easier trails (Javalina/East Loop at South Mountain... because it was a busy Saturday, and this trail is rarely used) and it wasn't too bad. I had to walk one or two climbs that I used to clean, but overall I felt good about my performance. My lungs need a little work, and over time, my legs will be able to propel me faster. Today's ride showed me that I will be getting back up to a good level fairly soon.

Nah. The SixSixOne Wrist Wrap is far better. John, if your injury is the right wrist, I can send you a Wrist Wrap. I no longer need it, thankfully.
Nah, don't do that, it's a corollary to Murphy's Law and all that. If you keep it you'll never suffer a right wrist injury as long as you have it available at home.

I have two sets. I'm good. Thanks for looking out for me, though.
What the heck were you doing in St George two days late? We were there on Sunday, but you never showed up! Gooseberry was fun, though, and the JEM trail was a sweet dessert...

I was in SoCal, enjoying an empty trail in the Santa Anas. The purple flower tunnels smelled sweet as we blazed through them at Fruitian speed.

Doh, left wrist. But just as well. I waited a full 5 months with zero saddle time for this thing to heal. It actually works quite normally now. The only difference is the strange set of bumps I can feel through the skin. =)

You have more patience than me. Six weeks after breaking my right hand and spraining my left wrist is was in Tucson, competeing in a 24 hour race. It hurt, sure, but I had to do it.

I'm looking forward to being able to get back up to speed. Right now fast, sharp hits to the wrist are difficult to bear. Soon, though, soon.

The Angry Man is going through the same thing. I kept pace with him on downhill and he was on a FS while I was on my SS. Normally with that advantage, he dusts me off quite well.

Getting off-topic I cracked my right wrist around Jan 2 2004 (radius - right down at the wrist; bone didn't move at all). I then spent 6 weeks in a cast. Range of motion is back. But at there is soreness at the extreme ends.
Did you have such an issue, and the soreness slowly went away over time? (Can't say I've had a similar soreness before; but thankfully i've only broken a few bones lately)

I sprained my wrist, and that is what continues to bother me more than the other hand, which I broke. My hand only hurts occaisionally, such as when I hit it on something, or somebody shakes my hand too hard.
The sprained wrist, though, is taking plenty long to heal. I've been told by many that soft-tissue injuries can be worse than bone breaks, and I certainly believe it now.

That's the exact same injury I had. I never got the cast, so I think it healed slower, perhaps. The doctors still couldn't prove it was a break, since the x-rays were inconclusive. In any case, the tendons were sprained. The pain SLOWLY went away. It took 5 months for the pain to be completely gone. It seemed to help when I started doing my own brand of physical therapy by doing some wrist stretches and such during the last month or so.
Like yours, my injury hurt the most when I bent my wrist too far in either direction, but mine also hurt when I applied pressure to my palm. I know for certain I slowed the healing by trying to do normal tasks at work, lifting boxes and the like. There were some days it seemed to get worse if I put any strain on it. I could tell because the swelling would increase. I refused to ride a bike (though it nearly sent me into depression!) until it was completely healed. I'm glad I did.
