  1. Hi there,

I'm on Atkins' Induction right now, day 4, and wondering if
it would be OK to do 40 minutes on the treadmill? Will I
need to ingest carbohydrates to do this without feeling
fatigued? Also I've used ketosis strips and they don't
indicate I'm in ketosis, but I've been perfectly keeping
    carbs under 20 grams daily . . . . any advice?

    Thanks!

    -Chad

  2. You have the calories.

    Everything in moderation. Go slowly.

  3. Yes I know but I'm not aware of how efficient the body is at
converting vast amounts of fat and protein to energy my
cells can use, when I'm spending large amounts of it in a
very short period of time . . . . on a "South Beach" type
diet with moderate carb intake from grains and such, I have
no problem doing 42 minutes on the treadmill at 4.3 mph & 3
degrees incline. I haven't tried on Atkins yet.

If you are used to that kind of excercise then just go
ahead. My own experience would suggest a 5% to 10%
performance drop, but there is no reason to not work out.

I experienced swelling of legs (water retention) after 4
weeks of doing Atkins. Seems the high protein content of
that diet was a bit hard on my kidneys. IMO the Atkins diet
is not a good idea, but I must acknowledge that Dr. Atkins
raised my awareness of the importance of keeping insulin and
    blood sugar levels low.

I did not alway see an indication either. The ketone levels
depend on when you last ate, how active you were and
possibly on other factors. So try at different times. In any
case, you should never see more than mild ketosis. You may
also have old or spoiled test strips.

It varies with different people. You may not notice any big
difference if you didn't used to take lots of carbs. Without
taking any carbs, your body will probably have used up its
short-term supplies within about 20 minutes, so from then on
you will most likely be burning fat although some stores of
glucose from the liver may be released too. The body can
burn fat when it has to with no problem and it doesn't
    necessarily affect energy availability.

Aren't those strips for detecting ketoacidosis? Ketosis
isn't the same: would you expect to see many ketones
from ketosis? You shouldn't, I think, as your body
should be burning them up! Perhaps someone else can
    clarify this point.

Anyway, conversion to a fat-burning metabolism takes about
12 days on full-scale induction, IIRC, but the body can burn
fat when it needs to regardless.

    Hi Martin and friends,

Question. I hear that when losing weight, one will
necessarily lose muscle as well. Is this or isn't it true?
Would Atkins' Induction prevent the burning of muscle
    better than a 33/33/33 low-GL*-carb/fat/protein diet?

Thanks! I'm very thankful for your comments.

You do lose muscle as well, more or less regardless of what
you eat (with a slight caveat to follow). The main way of
preventing this is to exercise, especially resistance
exercise to cover each of the main muscle groups. That way,
the body rebuilds the muscles. Also, if you make them
stronger, they will burn more calories anyway.
Cardiovascular exercise is needed to strengthen that system
too. If you don't take steps to prevent it, you will lose
muscle tone and although you will lose weight, you will
probably develop that scrawny-chicken look that so many
dieters wind up with, and which is very hard to shift once
it has set in. Muscles weigh more than fat, though, so you
may find that your actual weight loss is slowed while your
body improves its look - so your waistline could decrease
while you actually gain weight: this is healthy and counts
in your favour. Go more by your measurements than by your
weight; weight is only a rough guide to your health and you
need to consider the muscle-weight factor too. In the long
run, your body's fat supplies should be reducing.

So the particular diet pattern you choose will have no
influence on what happens to your muscles, provided of
course that it contains sufficient nutrients for your needs,
especially protein in the case of muscles. It is how you
    exercise that makes a difference.

It wouldn't hurt to have some carbs after exercising, as
this can produce an insulin spike: insulin moves amino acids
into muscles and helps therefore with muscle building. After
exercise, for about an hour and a half, the body continues
burning extra fat and muscle, so having some (not too many)
carbs at this time may help to cancel out some of the muscle
loss and speed the rebuilding, but this is unproven as far
    as I know.

Not necessarily. F.e., I have lost 15kg over 2.5 years and
actually gained muscle mass. I also changed from no
exercise at all to 3h of weight training and 2h of cardio
    exercise per week.

    Quoted message said:

    No.

The only way to preserve muscle mass is to give your muscles
a reason to be there -- use them or loose them!

What you eat matters little[1], how much you eat is the key.
As long as you expend more energy than you consume you will
loose weight. Most people don't want to hear that but it
    really is that simple. 😉

Some people feel more satiated on Atkins and that helps them
to cut back on their calories. YMMV.

First, why would you do this dangerous thing? And ketostix
are usually available at a pharmacy. If they don't have any
they should be able to get them, at least in Australia.
Dabetics use them to check for danger signs when their
    insulin has gotten too low.

Acidosis can occur when too many ketone bodies are produced.
    They are strongly acidic.

The body burns fat every day, unless you are overeating or
eat no fat, which is pretty well nigh impossible on normal
    wholefoods.
