Recipe software?

product....www.ffts.com loads of features and great tech
support. but sadly a PC program.

I thought I had mentioned that I can run PC software? I
checked out "Yum" and while I appreciate the input, it isn't
quite up to the standard I am looking for. I really don't
want share or freeware...Mastercook could not only scale
recipes, use "smart typing" and analyze the nutritional
content, but could generate shopping lists, wine suggestions
etc etc etc. Quite powerful and complete. I am still using
it, although it runs on the old Mac OS9 system. I am afraid
that, once I upgrade to "Panther" I might have to leave it
behind. Anyway, as I said before, either Mac or PC platforms
are an option for me. thanks

Apparently the last versions of mastercook are still around
and a bargain..I found the PC version at bigdaddy software.
If you feel like checking this excellent program out, do a
Yahoo search on "mastercook" the sierra link is a dead-end.
(they used to make it. It was then bought by a company
called "valusoft" and they never really did anything with
it. Pity, it's a great program.

Then you'd probably like Now You're Cooking. It will do all
of the things you list above, and do them quite well. Well,
it doesn't do wine suggestions. It does do menus, scaling
recipes, shopping lists, auto fill-in of ingredients and
preps, nutrition info, conversion from and to metric, etc.
It is shareware, but it's quite a complete program.

Though what you say may be true, Mastercook is still being
updated, with v7 being the most current. Sierra sold
Mastercook to ValuSoft and ValuSoft now enhances, provides
support and sells at a quite reasonable price.

I have owned Sierra version 4, 5 and 6. Bought ValuSoft
version 6.2 to get a version that would install under Win/ME
and have been very pleased with
it.

Yum! is still in development, but it looks like it's shaping
up as the best MC-Mac replacement. Features are being added,
and smart typing is in the current version, 0.5.3 (if by
that you mean it it autocompletes units and ingredients--and
both are editable, like a user dictionary). I wasn't crazy
about the other recipe software I've tried, mainly because
it wasn't enough like MC-Mac.

Yum! also scales recipes, BTW.

I've played with some of the bells-and-whistle featutes of
MC-Mac, and stopped using most; I made much better wine
suggestions myself, and I often found the nutritional
analysis of MC-Mac to be flat-out wrong.

Remember, this is version 0.5.3; the author looks like he's
interested in developing it. I already like how it works, so
I've moved my Mastercook recipes over to it (importing was
very easy); I anticipate great things for this application.

That's good to know! I followed the link to valusoft but
didn't see anything about MC. I went ahead and bought 6.2.
It's so great to be able to run ANY software! I still like
my ancient MAC version. Being required to constantly monitor
my food intake, it means a lot to have something that does
such an excellent job of nutritional analysis, and MC makes
it so easy to tweak recipes to my own requirements. (Low
fat, no sugar etc)

Mastercook is still out there. Do a Google search for it. I
use Mastercook
7.0 Warning: If you use an older version of Mastercook, read
the directions-there is a certain procedure you have to go
through(I can't remember what it is) to meld an old
cookbook into the new program.

out and I like it a lot. It even automates nutritional
info lookup and allows you to store a nutrition label with
each recipe. It also has a feature called Screen Import
that allows you to paste a recipe that you copy from
somewhere else, designate what each part of the recipe is
(title, notes, instructions, etc), and import it into your
recipe box. You can email recipes to other BigOven users
easily. Hmmm...what else...you can paste or browse for a
photo to associate with the recipe; automatically create
an .html page of the recipe. It includes creating shopping
lists, meal plans, and a lot more. Check it out, I think
you'll like it!

Living Cookbook has a similar feature. They call it
"capture." Quite handy.

One nice thing about recipe software is that many of them
allow you to have a free trial before you purchase. I
downloaded several different recipe softwares and tried them
out before finally settling on Living Cookbook.
