Any lube on the outside of the chain does nothing except
attract grit.
<G> The part of the chain that needs to be lubed is
INSIDE, where the pins run in the rollers.
True enough, and point well taken. I was not tuned in to
your use of the word "wipe" as you intended it, to the
outside only, but I can see now that was your intention,
thus your comment about not LUBING with WD40. On the
other hand, the stuff SRAM puts on their chains does
_not_ attract dirt, as it is a VERY dry coating. It
certainly is not what one would expect a "lube" to feel
or look like, and yet it does _appear_ to be durable and
well penetrated into the rollers. I personally will not
(in the future!) apply ANY lube on a new SRAM chain for
many rides, possibly a month or more, depending on the
conditions. When I do apply lube, it will likely be
WhiteLightning, which I have used almost exclusively for
years, until this winter when I tried to use some other
things: some teflon-based TriFlo spray; then later some
PTFE-based oil lubricant. These worked well in terms of
staying on in wet conditions better, but I can't say
they gave me any better chain behavior than
WhiteLightning has, and WL seems to live up to its
claims of self-cleaning the chain better than any of the
other things I've tried. I think I'm going back to it,
even though it requires more frequent application. It is
so terribly easy to apply, though, that becomes a moot
point. Okay, I have my helmet securely strapped on. Let
the anti-WL folks have at it.
