I thought they were unnecessary, but since my FR bike weighs
in the neighborhood of 40 lbs, I have been wondering if 8
really is needed compared to 6.
I find that with the extra weight of the bike, 8 is needed
to stop the gigantic monsterous behemoth in its tracks.
Otherwise, it will continue... into a rock garden or wall or
a dropoff nobody wants to drop off.
The bike I got came with 6s, but it required so much lever
pull with the Hayes hydros. With 8, I can stop with the kind
of power that my V-brakes do on my XC bike.
So does size really matter? Who here would rather have 8
inches than 6 inches?
