  1. As soon as the doctor sends his approval letter, we are
planning to enroll my 10 yr old grandson in WW.

Chris has a metabolic disorder called PKU that prevents him
from breaking down protein. If his levels are not
controlled, over a period of time it will cause brain
damage. So his diet consists of most fruits and veggies, a
special "formula" to drink every day, which is his protein
source, and lo protein pastas. The lo-pro foods and formula
are very high in calories. Basically, with the exception of
the fruit and veggies, most of what he can eat is "junk"
food. As a result, he's always hungry, lives on a lot of
empty calories, and is very overweight (190 lbs).

The PKU clinic he is with has decided they will allow us to
increase his protein intake for the next 5 months (we'll be
monitoring his blood levels very closely, though), and try
WW. They also changed his formula to a pill form, with about
1/4 the calories. While waiting for the letter, we put him
on program, ourselves. 26 points. His "formula" is 2 points.
Biggest change for him is brown rice, and the light whole
grain breads and whole grain pastas. He loves that.

He gained two pounds this week!!!!! I hope this is a fluke,
and he starts losing! He'll be so disappointed if WW
    doesn't work.

I will keep my fingers crossed for the lad. He has a
difficult road to follow, and needs all the luck and
    encouragement he can get!

  3. Good luck with the program. Have you also got him involved
in some sort of exercise program? That might help too.

  4. I'm encouraging him to ride the bike, but aside from that,
no. He has some issues with coordination, and he just
started with occupational therapy. Hopefully, with a little
weight loss, he'll start to feel like being more active.

  7. I don't know a lot about PKU, but I assume that even veggie
    proteins are out.

Regardless. Lots of luck to the little guy. It's no fun
being overweight as a kid since other kids are cruel and to
top it off it's due to a metabolic disorder.

  9. Hi, Sharon, When I first joined WW I gained 1.5 pounds. I
think I am the only person I know who gained the first week.
Still over the next 11 months, I lost 28 pounds and that was
    the important thing.

  10. Fortunately, he's considered mild PKU, so we don't "count"
most veggies and fruits. Potatoes, bananas - the higher
protein ones we do, and veggies like legumes, peas, etc.,
are not allowed. He eats a lot of salad (which of course
    doesn't keep him full). Sharon

  12. He could be eating more than before. Try and write down
what a typical day was for him before WW. Compare it with
today. It may be that he is eating better food now or he

  13. I take it that TVP (texturized vegetable protein) is out

Fortunately, he's considered mild PKU, so we don't "count"
    most veggies

    and

    Quoted message said:

fruits. Potatoes, bananas - the higher protein ones we do,
    and veggies

    like

    Quoted message said:

legumes, peas, etc., are not allowed. He eats a lot of
salad (which of course doesn't keep him full). Sharon

  14. If TVP is the stuff veggie burgers is made of, then it's
out. They are too high in protein. Most foods like that

  15. I looked at some of his lo protein pasta, and they are very
high when you calculate them for points. High calories, high
fat content, no fiber, high carbs. Everything is made with
    wheat starch.

I think you're right about him eating more or better. WW
told us not to go below 25 points. I have a feeling right
now we're in transition, and struggling to reconcile the two
diets, and he may be getting too much.
