Hippy - Pro Photographer?

yeah, the Madison was great.

Amazing to watch, but after about lap 20 I couldn't follow who or what team was in front, gave up and just enjoyed watching the tactics.

One question, just what really were the Police Bicycle Patrol up to? Maybe they just thought bringing along a radar gun to check on cyclists speeds in the straight would be fun.....what this leading to......?

I know there were official places for 1,2,3, but Team 9 (black) won the Madison for sheer guts & determination, poor things spent a fair bit of the race on their bums, but still finished.

Pat and Simon (Black Team) performed a treat. Pat was a
little sore after the first fall so he was a little off for

provided Simon with a gutsy performance and even after they
both crashed during a change (Pat came off the worst from

bad despite a restless nights sleep. His bike, a BT painted
up as a Giant, is sporting a few new scars.

Mitch the guy NickZX6R saw crash in front of him. I think he
came fourth today in the U19s points race, after putting in
some really aggressive riding.

Really?! Danny and I were talking about that bike as he
rolled around, before we met you. He was like "that Giant
looks just like those BT's" and I said something like "maybe
it IS a BT but he's sponsored by Giant, or maybe Giant
contract BT to make their track frames" - but I'd never seen
a Giant track frame - "or maybe they just copied the design?".

Now I know.. but why is it painted as a Giant? Sponsorship?

after Glenvale and ended up suffering a splitting headache
while "assisting" my girl in one of her shopping expeditions..

wot camera are you using and what kinda settings do you have to get it to for decent exposures in such 'trying' lighting?

done this stuff at speedskating but there you have the large advantage of a huge 'light-bounce' off the ice!

Canon 10D with mid-range 28-135mm f3.5-f5.6 zoom
and recently acquired (Sat morn) 17-40mm f4 wide for

Usually I don't use a flash, but given all the issues I've

go. Means my upper shutter speed is 1/200 and I can't
take burts of shots (need time for flash to charge).

I usually use shutter-speed priority mode at 1/180,
ISO400 (>800 is too noisy when cropped).
Still have to post-process most images as they are still
usually underexposed. Takes ages!

you batch-processing them in photoshop or individually?

i want one of them new (i think) 8Mb cameras. Sony, is it?
got a cool idea for some action pics. Will post some when I get round to doing it/them. track/skateboarding and bmx stuff at this stage. Will do in daytime but what ireally need is a camera that can have minimal 'in-between' shots time. Played with a mate's Nikon 5700 which is an awesome little bugger for the Do, but that new one has my eye now

them. For web gallerys, it can do bulk processing but for
the cyclingnews pics I go through and individually adjust,

Lag is a big factor with digital cameras. All compact digitals
suffer from noticeble lag (unless they've improved them greatly
in the last 6 months?)
DSLRs are much less prone to lag (hence their cost) and that's
why the pro's tend to use them - work like a film camera but
with _much_ less "development" time.

How much are they now? Some guys at work have Nikon compacts - maybe the 5000 though?

You tried Photoshop's webgallery? the new CS version
(8, in numbers) is pretty good

I've not tried printing anything bigger than A4. It's too
damn expensive! Remember posters are viewed from
a distance so you should be able to get away with upscaling/interpolating a smaller image (if you didn't get
a high-MP camera).

Ahh, I know what you mean. They are an awesome style.
I've seen some pretty cool ones. I think Manningham CC
has shots of a pier in this style?

There always is! You just have to bite the bullet with digicams.
You either buy the latest or try to time it so you buy a model

Doesn't bother me too much because the more time I spend
taking pics the less I see of the actual racing.

As at yesterday, the lower seating areas were filling up
fast but the upper areas weren't so I'll be buying my
tickets tomorrow for the Sunday afternoon finals session,
because that's the only session with a madison.

It won't surprise you to know that there are no qualifiers
for the madison. If they had qual's I think the race field
would be too small 🙂

Finished with the bunch however not in the placings.
Official Race Time
13.44.80 (Avg Speed approx 43.7kph). I managed, to my own
surprise, to win the fight for third wheel coming into
the second last lap. I was perfectly positioned but
just didn't have anything left for the kick at the
end. This was a far better performance than last year
where I finished 3 laps down on the leaders. What a
difference a year and some training makes!

I know that camera. A guy at work has one. Not sure
how powerful the flash is though. Does it have a
hotshoe attachment on top for a larger flash? (He
