I now am working a different wheel than in previous post
(Uniglide a week or so ago). This one is a ShimanoHG 105
rear hub, with a 7-speed cassette. There is noise coming
from this wheel when I spin and hold the cassette from
turning. Noise is not there when the cassette is turning. So
this seems to be a freehub problem.
My main question is : Is it common for freehubs to need
replacing? This is something that I have not yet had to
do on any of my bikes. Is this a regular maintenance
kind of item?
To fix the problem, Should I
a) try and remove and repair the freehub?
b) replace the freehub with the one specific to this hub (if
I can find it)?
c) buy the Harris cycle hub Sheldon mentioned and use those
parts as he (implicitly) suggested, ie everything except
the axle and the hub itself?
d) never stop pedaling?
I guess that I am leaning towards c) since this hub is
nothing special.
The 105 hub by the way is part #FH-1055. I also see that
Harris Cyclery sells this hub so that is another option I
suppose but that seems like a more expensive version of c).
