    My existing cables have definitely seen better days... two
    bikes, three seasons so I'm bout' to replace them.

    Regular cables on the cheap or is there a favourite?

    How about Avid's?

    I like the teflon coated cables (pretty much any brand) for
    shifters, and hydraulic fluid for brakes.

    Avid Flak Jackets are bad. The so-called 'sealed' system
    just sucks grime right into them. No one part seems to be to
    blame, just the system as a whole.

    These days I run Jagwire carbon housings with Teflon coated
    cables. They're sold under many different names, but they're
    readily available.

    I'm not sure if they're still around, but Ride-Ons seem
    to be the best. I've got a 5 year old set on my bike
    (albeit now with Teflon coated cables running inside the
    Gore-Tex sleeve.)

    Word to the Avids not being worth it. I haven't had any
    horrible problems - but they're no better than anything much
    cheaper. I wouldn't buy 'em again.

    I've got the Flak Jacket brake cables on my SS. Absolute
    pile of cack.

    They are still around, I bought some a few weeks back (in
    the uk). Highly recommended.

    Check with your LBS. Most bike companies are selling them
    under their house brand. Giant sells them, as well as
    Quality Bicycle Products. GT had them before being gobbled
    by Pacific. For myself, I'm using the ones sold by Giant
    since that's what I sell.

    I have seen and experienced the bad with them. The "nipple"
    tubes tend to get pinched in the braze-on stops, binding the
    cable. Dirt gets into the red tubing where it overlaps the
    nipple. The cable itself is thinner than normal 1.2mm cables
    and if you substitute other brands of coated cable it binds
    in the system.

    The stuff works great if you pitch the thin cables and ditch
    the nipples. I love that red tubing and carbon housing but I
    use them in the old, non-sealed fashion with Aztec cables.

    I bought the last set of those cables and tried them on the
    "shop goat." They didn't last a month on a bike used mainly
    as a neighborhood runabout.

    Like Gore Ride On cables, Dry Cables are a good solution if
    you're looking for a truly sealed cable system that will
    last for years without maintenance.
