There is a die made just for this purpose.
Check your shop.
Park Tool makes the dies and handles.

Not that hard if you have the right tools (fi:

also want to shorten the steerer after which the toptreads
have to be chased again, you could also use spacers instead.
No use to get the tool i think if you won't be using it
again, better take it to a LBS who has the tools.

A good bike shop can do it. I've heard it's a fairly slow
process because those are big threads.

It's a bit of a daunting task really. Like threading a
bottom bracket. You don't want to mess it up and it's tough
cutting new threads correctly on the fork steerer. It's not
impossible or rocket science or anything, but there's
definitely some hesitation there, especially if you only do
it once or twice a month. I'd really recommend having a
shopt do it for you. The dies are expensive and you're
unlikely to do it more than a few times in your life as a
do-it-yourselfer.

Assuming that it's a steel steerer with clean existing
threads and no other issues and assuming you want the new
threads below the old ones ( not above them) it's about $25
difficult.

No, in order to get the top cup down where it needs to be,
you will have to cut threads -- or else this would not be
a problem.

One more word of caution: the cheap Hozan dies are nearly
impossible for a novice to use safely.
You may find that you can procure a replacement fork
more economically than you can have more threads cut, in
some cases.

Asking the question is not frivolous, IMO; I have had people
bring me things like that in the past. You would be amazed
at the ability of the tech-illiterate to expect that
impossible or incredibly difficult things are routine, and
it is wise to not to assume that an unfamiliar inquirer is
well clued about such things.

I had the same need about a year ago, and was looking for an
alternative to getting the expensive dies to do it, when the
light came on and I realized this was likely a fairly simple
task for any competent machinist. I found one that day and
paid him about $10 to cut about 1" of nice clean threads
below the existing ones. Pitch and depth were just like the
existing threads.

Assuming that it's a steel steerer with clean existing

threads below the old ones ( not above them) it's about
$25 difficult.
Easy for a good shop. $15 to $30. Ask for Campy cutting
tools (cutting oil, and correct cutting technique). Make
sure you bring along your threaded cup to test the
"finished" diameter/new threads. They can adjust the final
diameter. Mine came out oversized the first time.

You're pulling things out of perspective, i said ALSO, so
beside cutting the extra threads he'll propably also wants
to shorten the steerertube because the topcup move down the
steerer and more threads get exposed on top. He can solve
this by cutting of the excess or added spacers.

That's why is asked, because he was just asking about
ADDING 1/2 inch of threads to a steerer and this isn't
possible on top.

Cut threads may be done with a lathe, but for forks it makes
more sense to use a guided die made for the purpose.
(There's no convenient way to chuck a fork into a

roll around the object to be threaded. This does not involve
a lathe. Generally the work piece stays stationary and the
rolling heads roll around it.

are made by rolling the part between 2 flat plates which

moving die plate.
I'm sure it could be done the way you describe, but you'd
either have to have 3 die rollers, or control a lot of
degrees of motion very carefully.
The 2 plate method turns out to be simpler, and therefore,
cheaper and more reliable.

I was thinking of shop-type spoke threading tools I've seen,
which have, indeed had 3 such rollers.
I don't doubt that the two plate system would be superior
on an industrial scale, but it isn't something that I've
run across.

I've never seen any other threading machinery besides the
Cyclo spoke threader with such an arrangement.
Have you ever cut and threaded a wheel's worth of spokes in
that beast? Scutwork!

Andy should have also mentioned the Phil Wood spoke threader
he also has, which rolls the spoke between two grooved
plates. A truly beautiful device.
