Support and Gear AFAIK was added way after SAG had been used
for decades. No one used the support and gear thing for the
first 20 or so years that I was involved in bicycling and
seemed to pop up as an 'answer' in the 80s.

My library goes back to the 1930s and both broom and sag was
used in English bike racing books and pamplets by at least
the late 30s. No sag and gear anywhere...

I was told recently that it was "Stop And Go" But I have no
faith in my source...
