Puncture resistant tyres

I don't think there is such a thing as a puncture proof
tire except for those horrid rigid things that were
around one time.

There are tyres that are more 'puncture resistant' than
others though. I'm sure the group will advise, but as you
say it has been covered many times (and has been talked
about this week actually).

Now, if anyone could tell me a tyre that retails for under
£15, comes in 700c x 23mm and will fit on my wheels easier
than what I've got at the moment (cheap Vittoria's) I'd be
interested (maybe even excited!). My current rubbers WILL
NOT go on without the aid of a tyre lever, and I think I
know most tricks in the book. Same on both sets of wheels,
Mavic CXP33's and Open Pro's. Maybe Mavic's are known for
being 'large'?

Specialised Armadilloios are about as punture proof as you
are going to get with a tyre, they do a 700/23 version as
well. Puncture proof they may be (got them on the rear of my
commuter) but they are NOT the best feeling tyre. You pays

I have Schwalbe Hurricanes on my Dawes. I've had several
punctures - despite the "Puncture Resistant" claims.

I have now added Slime kevlar inserts - so far, no
punctures since.

Not quite puncture proof. I've had one puncture so far in a
Nimbus Armadillo fitted new just before the New Year. It was
a flint that had worked its way in. I don't think the
rolling quality is as bad as many people say.

Is this another reason for riding further out from the edge
of the road? I shouldn't tempt the puncture fairy but in my
normal cycling I see lots of grit/gravel etc out of the
normal area swept by the cars and do my best to avoid it.
This leads to a marked absence in nasty hissy noises. The PF
has to wait for tyre destruction to occur.

but since then (18 months) not another puncture. I like them
- they're smooth rolling, decent grip and wear very well.
Just lost the rear one to a split in the casing, but
replaced it with same tyre.

Tufo has an extremely puncture proof tyre Tufo Elite Diamond

actually a cyclo-cross tyre, but it is slick and is rolling
very well. I have bee riding them on all kind of surfaces
including gravel roads and terrain with no punctures so far.

Tufo also has slicker tyres as with the same puncture proof

By mistake I purchased four Elite Diamond 28 LPS tyres that
fit a tubular rim, while I have clincher rims. I sell them
for a good price (40 £, they are usually sold for 65 - 70 $)

I find Specialised Fatboys which I use on a road MTB superb.
I've used them for years. I think that being slick is an
advantage. Some treads pick up rubbish.

There was a terrible tyre with such a pattern some years
ago, the Michelin
Idilis.

I can endorse John's experience. Been using Ultragators (700
x 23 and 700 x 28) on the 3 household bikes that see daily
use totalling ~ 15miles round town and occasional 25 - 50
mile day rides for over 18 months. Great rolling and wear
and only a couple of punctures.

Armadillo was the way to go for me. I laugh in the face of
broken bottles, and often touch wood.

Yes, the motor traffic grinds the grit, glass etc into
harmless dust, causes other debris such as thorns to be
pushed away. Another good reason for not using cycle paths,
lanes and pavements.

To big for you but these Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres are
bombproof if you've got a hybrid.

Old version of Vittoria Open Corsa CX TT 23 can *sometimes*
be bought for £15 (eg. from Xpedia). On Open Pros, they are
the easiest fitting tyres of any sort I've ever used on any
bike - and I don't mean the loosest (because too loose is
also awkward), but the easiest to handle (especially once
used a bit). Can be fitted (and removed!!!*) on/from Open
Pro rims without any tools whatsoever. Won't last as long as
your cheap Vittorias though, and cut easily in the wet. A
great tyre for a summer/dry-weather road bike. For winter,
why not use 25mm tyres? They tend to fit easier and still
can be fast. Usual Open Corsa price is about £19 to £21 from
the best dealers. EVO
CX/KS is virtually the same thing, AFAIK.

* I did have one pair that would remove themselves (BANG!-
style) but I reckon they were from a dodgy batch (and are
fine on slightly wider MA2 rims anyway). Rest have been
