Went for a walk yesterday and found an odd building. The building in question is at grid ref 546977(OL 14 Wye Valley and FOD) next to the old disused railway line at the bottom of Tintern Quarry. I was trying to find the old rail tunnel (which I did) and started to walk back up the (disused)line when all of a sudden the building starts shouting at me "Step away from the building or the alarm will sound".
Anyone know what this place is, the sign at the top of the track has references to wyeclimb and the BMC, but can't find anything on their websites. Just curious thats all!!!.

Oo-err! I've just had a look at the map - there's nothing there! Nothing of a sinister nature, anyway. You haven't been reading too much Enid Blyton, have you? <ducks>

Well if it was a secret MOD site it would not be on the map. However it is on the 1:25k.
Go to ordnancesurvey.co.ukgetamapOpen ↗ and put in ST546977 and you can just make out a building. I reckon it is just a version of the talking car alarms. All the same it would be a right pain in the ear if you just wanted to stand by the wall to shelter from inclement weather for a while. I'd be tempted to stand there an see if it did set the alarm off, the only problem is that the track- bed isn't a PROW. :-( -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

That's why I said "Nothing of a sinister nature". The building's there all right; there's nothing *else* there though. Nothing that looks like it could possibly merit a talking wotnot. -- Fran If you need my email address please ask.

Well I thought of OCP from the film Robocop, the people who 'run the cops!' It does sound like something Robocop said anyway! :-)

Wondering if the folks in uk.railway would know....

The only PROW is the footpath just up from this building, which I could not find!. We had the thing shouting at us 4 times at least and we didn't hear any alarm. It could be a silent one though as when we walked back up the quarry track there were fresh car tracks which weren't there when we walked down!!. And just to add to our paranoia, as we came out of the tunnel a helicopter flew up the river to our right at treetop height...cue various people hiding in the bushs.

Was the building feeling very depressed by any chance?
-- Paul Townsend I put it down there, and when I went back to it, there it was GONE!

I've had a car forecourt shout that at me before. As for the building in question I did try to go as far as the railway tunnel a couple of years ago but turned back when it got a bit too overgrown (I was out for a run at the time rather than walking). Generally I turn off at the left turn Forestry track before that and zig zag up to the top. I'll check it out next time I go by that way. Could it be something like an explosives store for the quarry?
I presume the tunnel's bricked up so as you can't go through it by the way?

It's not an explosive store as the quarry is disused!. Best way to describe the building is a big chalet style thing with a balcony on the first floor. Nice new looking place with windows on the first floor and boarded up windows on the ground floor. It's even got nice shiney new electricity poles and lines leading to it (must have cost a fortune).

I wasn't aware it was disused. The one time I pushed my bike up the steep gullly to the left of it there was a lot of quarry type noise coming through the trees so I assumed it was still in use but from a quick scan of the climbing websites it appears to have been shut a while.

What do we have so far - quarry sounds when the tunnel is already closed, a handy tunnel nearby, low-flying helicopters. . . . quick Mulder - over here!!!

The steel magazine is lying on its side. I believe permission to re-commence quarrying was refused a couple of years ago,and the site is being "refurbished" or something similar. The "pit" type quarry just up the track is quite spectacular.
