Regarding power measurements for pedalling, someone was asking me about the differences between the Polar chain tension power measurement (anyone know how that actually works btw?) versus the PowerTap/Computrainer method. Is the Polar real-time? Can you get power measurements while you ride? Can you get a real-time measurements from the Computrainer? They'd be interested in one stroke versus the next for comparison, rather than absolute accuracy. The reason why, this person had knee surgery and is worried they're favouring one side versus the other. Any techniques to achieve equal power output for both legs? I've never considered this before..

Yes, the Polar and the Computrainer both show power in real time, but power isn't shown by pedal stroke by pedal stroke. In both cases, the devices can show net pedaling balance (but not gross forces) in post-ride analysis, if one is interested in it. I'm not sure it's very important, even for those who have had knee surgery.
Brief summary: The frequency of up-and-down vibration in the chain is sensed. That frequency is related to the tension in the chain. Once the tension is known and the cadence is known, power can be calculated.

Computrainer has a real-time spin scan analysis. It doesn't show power delivered by each leg but does indicate whether you are favoring one over the other.

Knowing the % difference, you can easily calculate the power contribution of each leg. For example, at 100 W, if you're at 40%L and 60%R, then your left leg is putting out 40 watts, and right 60 watts.

I disagree that you can tell that from the Computrainer SpinScan since it only measures net difference (e.g., a one- legged cyclist can, if pulling up, get close to a 50/50 left/right split), but even if it *did* measure what you think it does, why is that important?
To put the question another way: suppose you did a Computrainer SpinScan test and found that your left/right balance was not 50/50 (as it probably won't be, since almost no one is exactly 50/50). Is there any evidence that exogenously altering your pedaling to achieve 50/50 balance results in performance improvement?

In this particular case, the person had surgery on one leg and had quite a bit of muscle deterioration. She's back cycling now but is concerned that she is subconciously favoring one leg as the muscle mass hasn't returned that quickly. This is sort of a visual reminder for her to even her stroke out as much as possible. I'm not sure if this approach is physiologically valid or not but I did want to pose the question for her.

Yeah, I hadn't forgotten the purpose of your original post. However, you're making a logical jump because evening out one's stroke doesn't necessarily mean that one is working the legs evenly: she could achieve a 50/50 split not by pressing down on the pedals more symmetrically, but by using the dominant leg to pull up (i.e., making the effort even more asymmetric).
If she's concerned that her legs look unbalanced, then her eye is the proper measuring device to use, not Computrainer SpinScan.
