worth upgrading crank?

You'll need a BB too. The ultegra crank double crank saves about 3 ounces. If the tiagra crank has a steel small ring, replace it with a generic Al one. You can save more money and real effective weight with lighter tires.

I doubt you'd notice a whole lot of difference by upgrading to the Ultegra cranks and BB. I'd use the Tiagras until they're shot (if that ever happens) and then upgrade.

I'd agree with these guys, even if you do save significant amounts of weight- going for Dura-Ace for example- you probably won't feel it a huge amount when you actually ride. The place to save weight is on rotating parts, the tyres, tubes and rims most notably. If you spent the money on some Continental GP Supersonic tyres you could easily save over half a pound, and that you will notice.

how about a sora crank to 105 or ultegra? i have an otherwise nine speed drive train on a bike with an 8spd sora crank set and bb.

For a double, the crankset upgrade saves about 200 grams.You'll also need a BB to go with it. I've seen new 105 Cranksets on sale and clearance for as little as $69. Looks nicer, but may not make you a bit faster.

He already has a 9 speed setup,if I am translating correctly.

yessir, i had the parts laying around to do it, sadly because of an accident and a crash, so i figured why not. is there any where i can get info about sora parts, like weights, online? the shimano site says nothing!

As he posted, 9 speed with the exception of the Sora 8 speed crank/BB.

So what's that got to do with 16/24 or 18/ 27?? Sora can be double or triple rrank as can the 105 and ultegra, and the 9 speeds are in back which he already has. I may keep it short,but the info is there, not some kind of code.
