for the past few years i've noticed a STRONG and profuse smell of something like ammonia stuck up my
nose after i do any type of working out where i'm sweating a lot.. it goes away usually after a
couple minutes and i think i notice it after a work out, not during. just wondering if this has
happened to anyone and what it is/ why it happens.

It can be related to ingesting large amounts of protein. Are you on a low carb diet? Sometimes its
related to that. There are also a LOT of other reasons.
Check a google...

I've experienced the same thing. For me, it only occurred when I resumed running after a prolonged
hiatus. Now that I'm back in the swing of things, the problem (if, in fact, it was a problem) is
gone. I'll be watching this thread too, as you've piqued my curiosity! -

Sam, Ozzie and others, Please elaborate on the "well-known occurrence of an ammonia smell or
protein catabolism." I've noticed this smell when I run, and have wondered why I smelled this way
; ) ??? Thanks!Proteins are long strings of amino acids. When proteins are metabolised, or broken down, they are
converted to their building blocks, namely amino acids. Amino acids are composed of a carboxyl group
(COOH), a hydrogen
(H) atom, a variable side chain (the distinguishing feature among amino acids), and an amino group
(NH2) all attached to what is called an alpha carbon atom. When amino acids are metabolised, the amino group comes off yielding ammonia (NH4+). Ammonia is
toxic to the body and has two fates, both which pass through the liver. In the liver certain enzymes
can use ammonia in the biosynthesis of new amino acids, nucleotides (the backbones of DNA and RNA),
and other biological amines (nitrogen containing compounds). The other fate of ammonia is excretion
through the conversion of ammonia to urea. Unpleasant as it might seem, one of the major roles of
our skin is excretion. Therefore the running or exercise induced "ammonia smell" is most likely due
to excretion of urea with perspiration.Hope that helps.

It is probably an ammonia smell. Ammonia is a by product of protein catabolism. This seems to be
a well-known occurrence. -
Not so weird since it seems to be asked regularly. Thanks for the response, Ozzie.
I wanted to add that if you are wearing synthetic clothes (Coolmax, etc.) like many runners do, the
smell is harder to get rid of than from natural fibres. I found that washing with washing soda and
regular detergent helps, as well as drying on a clothes line if possible.I have seen people wearing fancy running/athletic type clothes when they are not running ("I AM AN
ATHLETE" fashion statement?) and I cannot imagine that they wear these clothes for real athletic
pursuits. Mine get quite clean but they do still smell when I start to sweat. Not a big problem on
the roads but not pleasant at the crowded Farmer's Market.Donna

Yeah, as if joggers needed any more help in the "turning people off" department.

Time for a douche.

I experience a funny "taste" when i try running after i've been getting out of shape. I used to
think of it as tasting my lungs. hhmmmm. You said it was a smell. I noticed it to be more of a taste. Would you say that you almost taste it?
just a thought. -
yer funny
