Patchy Snow!

Strange patterns of snow! Drove through Glen Coe today, virtually no snow! The Aonach Eagach looked snow free. All the Munros south of The Ben along the main road had only small patches of snow. A bit of rain on Wednesday and it will looks like very late spring! I crossed the Corran ferry and there was hardly any snow in sight. Then drove over the pass to Strontian. Suddenly 4 inches of snow along the road. I descended towards Pollack to do Carn na Nathrach and there was deep snow along the road. I tried to find the forestry commission car park that Graham had mentioned, but missed it on the drive in because it was buried in 5 inches of snow! So I drove all the way to the second bridge, cutting a mile of walking each way. That is my story and I'm sticking to it 8-) Carn na Nathrach was a nice hill. deep snow in places on the way up. The ridge is VERY undulating 8-( west side of the hill covered in snow, the east side had hardly any. Clearly the hills created a rain shadow. cheers, Rob

Strange patterns of snow! Drove through Glen Coe today, virtually no snow! The Aonach Eagach looked

Forget Scotland it's all in Snowdonia this weekend. Snow all the way down to the main roads and
lower, glorious sunny weather.
Walked fron Ogwen cottage up Y Garn today via the north eastern ridge and back down via Devils
Kitchen. Needed crampons as there is ice where compacted on routes but virgin snow is mainly
powdery. Climbers out on ice climbs in cwm idwal.
Should still be with us tomorrow or later but haven't seen the forecast yet to confirm.

Yes indeed Paul, decent snow in the Beacons for a change.
An early start on Sunday morning saw me and the dogs (Celyn & Branwen) wandering across part of
Fforest Fawr. We parked at the bottom of Craig Cerrig Gleisiad and climbed it by the permissive

of the Cerrig looking toward Pen y Fan and Corn Du).
We then headed across Rhos Dringarth to the top of Craig Cwm Du encountering some deep snowdrifts on
the way, the dogs happily floundering through them. From Craig Cwm Du we followed the ridge to Fan
Dringarth gallery41104.fotopic.netp3071641.html (a photo of Fan Gyhirych and the Carmarthen
Fans in the distance) and Fan Llia before descending through more drifts to the Ystradfellte
Reservoir dam which we crossed to head north along the eastern side of the reservoir and the infant
Dringarth. That was slow going, there are a lot of gullies containing streams coming down off Fan
Fawr and each one was full with drifted snow, hard work but made enjoyable by being accompanied by a
pair of red kites wheelling above us. We crossed a dozen or more of these gullies before coming to
Nant Mawr and followed its northern bank across the moorland to reach the cliffs of Craig y Fro and
headed northward back to the Cerrig and the steep drop back down to the A470.
The morning was glorious but it clouded over a bit after lunch (correctly forecast by Metcheck). An
enjoyable walk, with a lot of snow about, the dogs were tired at the end though.
When we drove home there were cars double parked for about half a mile each side of Storey Arms.
Wish I had £1 for everyone who climbed Pen y Fan yesterday, would have been much too busy for us
though. We met no one all day but I did spot people in the distance, which is fairly surprising for
this relatively unvisited part of the Beacons.

A great choice then. Any footprints? Most of the snow will be ruined on the touristy routes now.
It's so hard finding a decent bit of untouched snow for a foreground now.
Here's a couple of panos from yesterday. First is the scene from Bwlch Cerrig Duon, showing the
Mynydd Du escarpment in all its splendour, plus a few of the many parked cars in the area.

The trickiest part of the walk was the couple of hundred metres from the layby car park to the first
wall, well walked (and tobogganed, if there is such a word) very icy. Evidence that a couple of
other walkers had used the same route from the Cerrig to Fan Llia the day before, from there on down
to the res and up the Dringarth nothing, though plenty of pawprints (fox) all around. There were
footprints in the snow at the dam though, as this 4 shot panorama of the Ystradfelte reservoir and

ALL my photos have the dogs in shot somewhere!).

Just as well, I didn't manage to get out. I'd still like a stroll in the snow though,
maybe tomorrow.

Yes. You don't see many two headed dogs in the Beacons.

To give you an idea what I can see through it, here's a 100% crop from a telephoto shot of walkers
on the summit of Fan Brycheiniog, taken from Pont ar Wysg, nearly two miles away.
