  1. Hi all, I need to upgrade my chain and cassettes on an older winter bike. However, I can not seem to find an 8sp chain (CN-7400). Browsing excelsports.com website, they sell model CN-7701 indicating that it is for 8 and 9 speed. On the Shimano website, it is indicated as being a 9 speed chain. Will the narrower CN-7701 work on a D.A. 8 speed cassette?

    Thanks

The highest-quality Shimano 8-speed chain is the HG91. It is an excellent chain, our chain of choice
when we have somebody who goes through chains quickly (particularly those who find ways to actually
break them), and runs just over $20. At one point I believe it was marketed as the 8-speed DuraAce
    chain, but not sure.

I wouldn't use a 7701 on an 8-speed system when a proper chain is available.

CN7401 available for 7/8 speed DURA ACE HG at Lickton's.

or SRAM PC-58 or SRAM PC-68 work pretty well for 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

  4. Get a Sram PC-48...a dedicated 8s chain. Do not use the 7701 chain. It is a 9s chain, period. I
think excel is arbitrarily expanding the application of this chain, plus they probably don't
    sell a PC-48.
