Do skills matter? Its great that you're concerned about us all being happy with our riding
experience. Thanks! When your concern turns to judgment of our riding experience, well

Vandeman doesn't believe his opinion is "opinion", either.

When the Baptists came to my door in August, I sent them on their way with bottled water. I was
polite to the Jehovah's Witnesses. I even refrained from making the LDS boys blush. But Bill, I
swear if you came knocking with that [censored], I'd probably have to set my dogs on you.

Oh sure if I cared to. I know you're passionate about SS, but you know this crowd better than I do
and should know that shove it down your throat evangelism just doesn't work. Would it work on you?

What does SS have to do with skills? I'm aware that the tendency is towards FUSSY compliance, but
why would it take more skills to ride a rigid SS than a rigid geared?

Don't kid yourself. Any one of my dogs alone might like you. Well, probably not Zane. Or Cooper,
either come to think of it (frickin' terriers!). But Scully might. Put all three together, though,
and the pack mind takes over. They'd sic Mother Teresa if they thought I didn't want her around.

That's the single speeders dirty little secret. They want you to believe that riding a pure, rigid
SS will assure you of better skills. But in actualality, all you have to do is "point and shoot" Any
brain dead, cro- magnum can ride like that.

Actually, I agree with this statement. Not necessarily the SS part, but I'm certainly of the opinion
that riding rigid teaches you to be a better rider.

Working the terrain and coordinating momentum with accessing upper body more, to make it up short
bursts where normally you'd gear down? Spinning like a hamster on crack to keep up on the flats?

I have both to compare with, ie, fully rigid single, fully rigid geared, and I'm surprised how much
I depend on gears when given the option. Quite exciting to cut the safety rope and go gearless.

    just some thoughts.

As a hardtail rider, I agree. But I don't think the addition of a front shock makes you "disregard"
finding the right line on a particular section of trail. Probably does on an FS though.

In regards to pedaling, yes. But you still pick what you think are your best lines, regardless if
your running suspended, or rigid. (Again, not talking bout FS)

From what I recall of those days riding rigid, changing to a front fork made a big difference in
what I could get away with.

Apparently there are differing opinions in what is meant by "skills". I suppose it is a "skill" to
know how to hit a hill at the right speed to make it up in one gear, and perhaps its a "skill" to
maintain a cadence to ride as fast on flats as someone who's in a higher gear (though that seems a
    bit of a stretch).

Certainly having only one gear means they have to concern themselves with things that the geared
rider doesn't - which is why I don't really buy the "free your mind" bit. They still have to concern
themselves with the technical details of the ride - just different technical details.

In the end, I see that people who have these bikes all seem to ride them a lot and enjoy it (for
whatever reason). If people were buying them and then leaving them in the garage, THAT would be
hype. I don't pretend to understand what the big deal is, but I don't see a reason to ignore the
    concensus.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don't see the reason why anyone would feel the need to "sell"
singlespeeding the way Wheeler does. I have missed more riding time from my one stupid attempt at
riding in one gear (resulting in a knee injury that has never fully healed) than I have from any
other thing (except family/work commitments, of course).

Personally *I* wouldn't say a thing like that. I'd worry it could be taken to mean something quite
    different then what I'd intended.
