  1. G'day all,

a mate has been told, (by his LBS),that in order to change his Chorus 10 cluster from 11-23 to 12-25, he needs to buy a whole new cluster. Can he just buy the individual cogs that he needs?....being a died in the wool Shimano man, I have no clues on Campy stuff. Any help would be appreciated,

    cheers,

    Hitchy

  2. Hitchy:

Haven't checked with Shimano directly, but several shops told me that they don't sell individual cogs. I was to convert my 12-23 to 11-23. Had to buy a whole cog set. Are you saying that we can mix and match Shimano cog components (by purchasing individual bits)?

    Cheers,
    Amir.

I think he's talking about Campagnolo not Big S. Can you swap Campag cogs on a cassette?

  4. Hi Hippy:

I got the question first time around, except that I have no idea about campies either. I was throwing a new question, because the original post looked as if we can buy individual cogs for Shimano (contrary to what I was told). That's all.

    Cheers,
    Amir.

    G'day Amir,

Its a relatively simple job to change from 11-23 to 12-25 on Shimano. He would just need to buy a 25-23-21 (the top end are stuck together) to replace his 23-21-19. He would probably also need a 19 (you can get those singularly I think) & then drop the 11 at the other end.......relatively cheap & simple operation. With Campy, what he's being told is that he needs to buy the WHOLE cassette (all bloody 10) to achieve the same outcome. The really sad part is they want about $250 for the priviledge vs about $70 for the 4 DA equivilants......I guess what I'm wondering is...is this right??,

    cheers,

    Hitchy

Individual Campagnolo sprockets are not readily available

Do you want a cassette combination Shimano doesn't make? We carry many

individual sprockets for >Shimano cassettes, and can provide most sizes. The most economical
approach to custom cassettes is to >buy a stock cassette that has most of the gears you want, then
an additional sprocket or two to substitute for >the un-wanted sizes.

now you just have to find somewhere in oz that has them

Well I reckon cassettes are all more expensive than they should be, especially 10 speed. But
new road bikes are sold on the promise of the latest thing so somebody has to pay for the
    marketing costs.

Incidentally, $250 is around about what a DA cassette costs.

See if you can get Miche cassettes or sprockets. They are compatible with Campag so maybe it will
    be cheaper.

He could always go with a Veloce cassette for ~$140. I don't reckon there's much practical
difference between the two. Well, not $100+ difference anyway.

    Cheers.

He doesn't need to buy a complete cluster. There are charts on the Campag website that show exactly
which cogs and spacers go to make up each cassette.

    Briefly, he'll need a new 12, 16-17, 19-21, 23-25 plus new I and L spacers (1 each), plus maybe a
new lockring. The new 12 has ridges to fit with the lockring. In the 11-23 Chorus, the 16 cog is a
single, and the 17-19 and 21-23 cogs are doubles.

The next trick is to find someone who stocks the parts.

Centaur and Veloce cassettes are cheaper, but a bit heavier.

  9. Hi Hitchy:

So the morale of the story is that I was ripped off by the mechanics' wrong advice. They said that Shimano won't sell individual cogs. This cost me $250 when I bought a set of 11-23 and a set of 12-27 (both Ultegra). Gotta doublecheck next time.

    Cheers,
    Amir.

  10. Richard's on the money

    the 2 clusters configs are:

    11 - 12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 16 - {17 - 19} - {21 - 23}
    12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - {16 - 17} - {19 - 21} - {23 - 25}

you will, as stated need to change the smallest one to ensure it integrates with the lockring

This is all approx $100US (120Oz)
plus getting your local wood-duck LBS to change it over

you could try cecil walker (his brother owns the Oz campag importing, and bianchi, sella, etc).

    or take a look at:

    http://www.branfordbike.com/cassette/cog16.html

branford is the best for campy info and comaptability issues. far better than the campag site

All of a sudden a Veloce at Price: $147.00
    is looking good!

  11. I'd be very surprised to find somewhere in Australia selling individual campy 10 speed or shimano 10
    speed cogs.

Somewhere like Clarence Street Cyclery in the middle of Sydney may, but I doubt any LBS could
    afford to do it.

The only other option is buy from OS.

The story I heard is that Shimano stopped selling individual cogs when they went from Uniglide to
    Hyperglide.

Get a lockring tool and a chain whip and then it's easy to do it yourself.

I'll be needing some Hyperglide sprockets before long, as a couple of my sons have this setup (I use
    an internal-gear hub myself).

I notice that sjscycles.comvIndex.htm has a range of replacements (under
"CASSETTES" / "Hyperglide spares"😉. Hopefully all those ID code letters will make sense when the
time comes (and reading sheldonbrown.comk7.html seems to help here).

With techo questions like this that don't relate to Oz in particular, you'll do better asking on
rec.bicycles.tech. It's amazing what some people know and they are mostly helpful too.

    Hope this helps,
