  1. So I had my first criterium this weekend ( I love Road Rash) so I got outsprinted at the end.....I did not like that......so does anyone out there have any good sprint training tips/ workouts? Interval sets maybe? Thanks.

    practice sprinting.... ;-)

seriously, do you know why you were outsprinted? was it due to you being badly positioned and/or being on the wrong wheels (skill based sessions solve this), or was your peak power too low (i.e. you can't sprint very well; specific training helps)? or was it a combination of the two?

or was it something else (e.g. fatigued from the rest of the race)?

Ric's spot on there... Sprinting is mostly about technique & positioning especially in a Crit. If you are a certain type of sprinter(and you are happy with your power curve for sprinting) you could ride differently to take advantage... e.g.

If you have a good jump try to make the sprint shorter, or jump away when no one will expect ...and try to hang on...

If you have a great power output/top speed make the sprint a classic line out and sprint... you'll leave the rest behind.

Or do what I do and sit on all the time and just pop by in the gutter while no one is looking 😉

Just try different things... dont be bullied in a sprint, and try something different until you find something that suits you.

  4. Try this, I do sprint training on a short hill. being that I live in Miami I use a tall bridge or I go to a shopping plaza that has a good incline going into the parking garage. I do 8x sprints on interval days. It seems that doing sprints on inclines builds strenge and power.

Just to show it works, I have a friend that competes in CAT 3 and I race in CAT 5 and I was training with him one day last week and he wanted to do some head to head sprint training for 100 meters we did this about 10 times, at the end I took him every time and he had asked "What the heck are you doing for training on the sprints" so I told himl. Lets see how he does in a couple of weeks.

  5. Also, do your sprints while your legs are fresh. Give lots of recovery time between each sprint. You want to make sure that each 'rep' is as powerful as possible.

This I remember from my sprinting days as a youth.
