Does anyone know how to get the oil out of a coconut at home. I want to see if coconut oil will help a skin condition I have and do not want to spend bit bucks for a bottle of it at a health food store so I thought maybe if I bought a coconut I could extract some of the oil at home and test it that way. I bought some unsweetened fine flake coconut, mixed it with some hot water and crushed the flakes a bit and got what appears to be coconut milk out of the flakes. But that is not the oil, so I do not know what to try next. Any ideas?
Buy regular coconut milk in cans from a Ethnic store. The top part is oil fact. Or go to a Indian ethnic food store. You can buy coconut oil. Look for such stores on the web as well.

as a soap and skin lotion-cream maker i can tell you that straight up coconut oil will dry out your skin.

One way to get any oil from a plant is to mash up the material as small as possible, maybe use a blender. Let it dry thoroughly. Soak in 99% isopropyl. That is rubbing alocohol. The other 1% is water. Let it soak a day or two. Strain out the plant material using cheese cloth, squeeze all the liquid out.
The next step may be difficult. You need to evaporate the alcohol which then leaves you with oil in the container. Be very careful, alcohol vapours are very combustible. You can use a distillstion apparatus or just simmer it in a pot on an electric hotplate in a *very well ventilated* area away from any possibility of any sparks or flames coming into contact with the fumes.
This is how they extract many oils from plant materials. I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a proper distillationr apparatus.

What is the point of this kind of silly posting? Why are you wasting your time and ours?

Yes, why aren't you just tirelessly repeating the tired old Atkins' mantra that most of us learned about decades ago.
Actually, my mantra is not Atkins. It is the evils of refined, high-GI and junk carbs. I suppose you feel that is a need for nutritionally empty refined white flour and sugar in our diets?
Explain to me what you learned about low-carb decades ago. Judging by your posts, you haven't learn much about anything, especially nutrition.

And, by the way, the thread that you chose to use to criticize me about repeating "the tired old Atkins" mantra" has absolutely nothing to do with carbs. It has to do with extracting oils from plant material.
Are you somehow upset that I knew how to do this and you didn't? Is this jealousy rearing its ugly head? Look, don't feel bad, I know plenty of things that people like you can never hope to know about. You are not alone in your lack of knowledge. Just relax, keep reading my posts, and eventually you may learn enough to appear to be intelligent to those around you.
