I know most of you are probably getting bored of me asking for advice about various parts, but I AM getting there, I promise you! ;-)
This time I am replacing the front mech. I know the band size 31.8mm,a nd I know that I need a top pull mech. I don't know the difference between top swing and conventional mechs though. Could someone please enlighten me as to the differences and the suitability of each?

The conventional mech has the cage below the parrellogram and is normal on hardtails. The top swing has the cage above the parallogram and is more compact in design to fit into the limited space of rear sus swing arm configurations. While it's unlikely to be able to fit a conventional mech onto a bike designed for top swing I can't imagine there being a problem fitting a top-swing in place of a conventional mech but IME conventional mechs wear better so it's not advisable if a choice is available. -- Regards, Pete
