Shimano brake cable outer guide?

I think you're talking about the plastic "catapillar" guide that goes over the Brake cable and under
the handlebar tape. I usually throw them away. Don't sweat it.

The Outer Guide comes with in the package with the brifters.
The Shimano instructions that also come with give you 3 easy to follow illustrated step on how, where, and how to trim it. It will make your installation look and work smoother.
An example for the Shimano 105 is shown on their web site at:

I find that the bakes work better when you follow all Shimano's directions.

Hi There, well it isn't sold separately when you buy a set of DA 7703 "brifters", it is included. I
just installed a new set of levers and I used them as directed. I followed Sheldon's directions for
cable install and hooked up the cables, strapped the lever, so that the calipers were tight against
the wheel and then routed the cable with outer guide, finishing by taping the outer guide in place.
I think one benefit is that you could replace your cable and outer housing, without having to remove
the tape all the way back to the levers. If you haven't done the install yet, I would use them. Life

Mostly for hbars w/o a groove, to make the brake housing 'bump' under the tape smoother. Not really
needed. Just chuck it..
